Junior QB Nick Ambrasas threw four touchdown passes and junior RB Jake Barkley rushed for 151 yards to lead St. Thomas (2-1, 2-0 MIAC) to a 42-0 MIAC football victory over visiting Carleton (0-3, 0-2) on a soggy Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
The game was delayed more than an hour by lightning before kickoff and again for 47 minutes during the first quarter.
The shutout was the first at home for St. Thomas since 1996 and the first MIAC home shutout since 1994. The Tommie defense held the Knights to 3 net yards rushing and eight first downs. UST outgained Carleton in total yards, 457-146.
Ambrasas threw touchdown passes to Ty Whitney, Jon Learn and Justin Hall in the first half as St. Thomas rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead in a steady rain. Nick Whitehead scored on a 3-yard run.
Learn caught a 7-yard TD pass from Ambrasas in the third quarter. Peter Ridley finished the scoring with an 18-yard run with 1:07 remaining.
Ambrasas completed 10-of-16 passes for 143 yards and no interceptions. Barkley, who had 119 first-half rushing yards, topped the 100-yard rushing barrier for the 11th time in his last 12 games. Barkley now has 2,347 rushing yards in 22 career games, 319 from No. 2 on the UST career charts.
St. Thomas had no turnovers and its defense intercepted the Knights' Jon Groteboer twice, recovered a fumble, and sacked Carleton quarterbacks five times (two by Sean O'Leary).
UST shares first place in the conference with Bethel and St. Olaf at 2-0.
St. Thomas plays at St. John's on Sept. 29.
