Jake Barkley's 272 rushing yards carry Tommies to MIAC win
St. Thomas sophomore running back Jake Barkley had TD runs of 68, 83 and 75 yards to lead the host Tommies (1-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) to a 38-22 football win over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Barkley's 272 yards rushing on 15 carries was just seven yards shy of a 24-year-old UST record for single-game rushing.
The Toms, who led 16-0 at halftime, built a 23-0 third-period lead on Barkley's second long TD rush of the day. The Cobbers cut the lead to 23-15, but didn't get closer.
UST didn't get sacked and had no turnovers while the Cobbers were sacked seven times for 58 yards, lost two fumbles and had a tipped pass intercepted. The final Cobber fumble came on the UST 5-yard-line in the final period.
UST's Bob Hannah forced a fumble on a QB sack in the second-period that was recovered by Brent Nelson at the UST 17. On the next play, Barkley dashed 83 yardsfor a TD for a 9-0 lead.
Concordia ran 91 offensive plays and outgained UST 421-420, led by senior WR Adam Strainer's 14 catches for 194 yards, one TD and one two-point conversion. Senior QB Jeff Hertel completed 22-of-45 passes for 291 yards.
UST completed just four passes for 60 yards -- one a 51-yarder to Andrew Hilliard on a tipped ball that set up a 4-and-1 TD run by QB Alex Jadin for a 16-0 lead.
