Three-time NCAA National Champion Steve Miller joined the University of St. Thomas men’s hockey program as an assistant coach, bringing more than three decades of collegiate and international coaching experience to the Tommies.
Miller arrives in St. Paul after three successful seasons as associate head coach at the University of Minnesota, where he helped guide the Golden Gophers to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the 2023 NCAA Championship game. His defensive units consistently ranked among the nation’s best, and he played a key role in developing NHL-ready talent, including Brock Faber, Ryan Johnson, and Jackson LaCombe.
A highly respected figure in college hockey, Miller was the recipient of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Terry Flanagan Award in 2009, recognizing his outstanding career as an assistant coach. Over his career, he has contributed to three NCAA national championships, 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven regular season conference titles, and six postseason championships.
Miller has also made a significant impact on the international stage, helping lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship with a perfect 7-0 record, followed by a bronze medal in 2018. He has remained a fixture with USA Hockey, earning additional medals including silver in 2019 and gold in 2021, 2024, and 2025, and is slated to be part of the staff again in 2026.
Prior to Minnesota, Miller served as associate head coach at Ohio State from 2017-22, helping the Buckeyes to a Frozen Four appearance in 2018 and a Big Ten regular season title in 2019. He also held coaching roles at Air Force and Providence, where he helped the Friars capture their first NCAA national championship in 2015.
Miller spent nearly two decades at the University of Denver (1994–2014), where he was instrumental in building one of the nation’s premier programs. During his tenure, the Pioneers won back-to-back NCAA titles in 2004 and 2005, along with multiple WCHA championships. He coached and recruited dozens of NHL players, including Hobey Baker Award winners Matt Carle and Will Butcher.
Miller began his coaching career at Saint Mary’s University (Minn.), his alma mater, before moving on to Miami University, where he coached current St. Thomas head coach Rico Blasi. During his time there, the RedHawks captured a CCHA title in 1993 and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
As a player at Saint Mary’s, Miller was a three-year varsity letterwinner and helped lead the Cardinals to a MIAC championship in 1988.
Miller and his wife, Heidi, have three children: Alexis, Cole, and Connor. His son, Cole, is currently a senior defenseman for the Tommies.
