In 2025, Pete Wareham starts his 33rd season as the head coach of St. Thomas Men's Cross Country and head coach for the men's track & field program.
His 33-year run as a head coach is the longest of any current Tommie athletics employee.
With a young roster featuring seven freshmen, St. Thomas Men's Cross Country continued its development during the 2024 season, placing sixth at the Summit League Championships. Junior Sean McNiesh led the Tommies over the final three races, highlighted by a 20th-place finish at the conference meet. Sophomore Max Westerlund opened strong with a second-place finish at the Oz Memorial, while freshman Kai Liljequist emerged late, placing in the team’s top three over the final stretch. Senior Tony Weeks capped his career with Summit Academic All-League honors.
Senior Jack Rosner led a record-breaking year for the Tommies across both indoor and outdoor seasons, winning the Summit League decathlon title and setting program records in the decathlon (7,661) and 110m hurdles (14.01). He also earned silver in the indoor heptathlon and was part of a group that secured six All-Summit League honors during the outdoor campaign. St. Thomas posted 50+ new marks to its all-time top 10 lists across both seasons, including three indoor sprint records by junior Mitchell Piehl. The Tommies finished with 28 athletes ranked top 10 in the Summit League during the outdoor season.
Tommie Men's Cross Country continued its impressive start to NCAA Division I competition with a third-place finish at the 2022 Summit League Championships, led by senior Biel Wiel with a seventh-place finish overall. Zach Haire repeated as a selection to the Summit League All-Academic Team while the team repeated with USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. During track & field competition, Wareham coached the men's team to fourth place finishes at both the Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Championships, including an indoor conference title by Sam May and the second consecutive outdoor conference title in the decathlon by Nate Raddatz. Overall, the Tommies finished with all-conference selections in the heptathlon and distance medley relay indoors and the 200m dash, 400m dash, and 4x400m relay outdoors. Four program records were broken between both seasons, the 400m dash and heptathlon indoors and the 200m dash and 1500m run outdoors.
In 2021-22, Wareham guided St. Thomas' distance runners in an historic transition to Division I competition. He led the Toms to second place in the eight-team Summit League Championships race last October. Two weeks earlier, his team placed sixth out of 31 D-I teams in the Bradley Pink Classic, and set a program record with five runners breaking 25:00 for 8,000 meters.
Wareham coached two NCAA champions during the 2011-12 school year -- cross country's Ben Sathre, and track and field 800-meter man Mike Hutton. Sathre was also the 2010 NCAA Division III runner-up in cross country. Two of Pete's 2015-16 distance runners, Dylan Baumann and Jacob Gerhartz, were voted CoSIDA Academic All-America recipients.
Wareham was named the USTFCCCA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2012 indoor track and field season. In 2009, Wareham guided the Tommies to their first NCAA team qualifying berth since 2002 in a close finish at the Central Regional, where just five points separated the top four teams. In six consecutive NCAA Division III cross country championship meets from 1997-2002, the Tommies placed eighth, 12th, 12th, 15th, fifth and 18th, with seven individual All-America finishes. He also coached three track and field All-Americas in the NCAA Division III 1,500 meters in 1998 and 2000. His Tommie CC squads have amassed numerous conference championships, and as an assistant in indoor and outdoor track & field, he was a part of nearly three dozen MIAC champion teams.
A native of Minneapolis, Minn., and a graduate of Southwest High, Wareham ran for St. Thomas from 1981-85 and was a six-time All-American in cross country and track. He ran in all four NCAA Championships in cross country. He placed third individually at nationals as a senior, leading the Tommies to the NCAA team title. He also placed 22nd and second at the national CC meet, helping St. Thomas to fourth and third-place team finishes. He was a key contributor to the Tommies’ NCAA champion indoor track & field team as a senior in 1985. In track and field, he won three MIAC Championship races, and finished runner-up in the outdoor 5,000 as a sophomore.
Wareham resides in Woodbury, Minn., with his wife Mary Jo. Their son, Nate, graduated from St. Thomas in 2016 and was a member of the Tommie men’s golf team. Their youngest son, Nick, competed in the state cross country and track & field meets as a distance runner at Woodbury High, and later was a D-I All-American competitor at Georgetown University.
