Trevor Warner

Trevor Warner joined the St. Thomas football staff in March 2024 as the safeties coach and comes to St. Paul from Stony Brook University, where he served in the same role for the Seawolves during the 2023 season. During the 2023 season, Warner mentored safety Nick Chimienti to a 4-takeaway season, good for being tied 2nd in total take-aways in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) conference play. Chimienti was just the fourth Seawolf safety to record at least three interceptions in a season over the last 20 years. His three interceptions were good for 2nd in CAA conference play.

Prior to his time on Long Island, Warner served as the defensive coordinator at Ithaca College, a position he was promoted into in 2020. As one of the youngest defensive coordinators in college football, in Warner's two seasons as defensive coordinator at Ithaca, he helped lead the team to a 20-3 overall record and an undefeated Liberty League Championship in 2022. That same season, the Bombers posted a 12-1 overall record and went a perfect 10-0 en route to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance.

Over his two-year stint as Ithaca's defensive coordinator, Warner coordinated defensive units that ranked amongst the nation's best. Of the 239 Division 3 programs, the Bombers ranked in the top 10 nationally in defensive pass efficiency (third, 88.86), fumble recoveries (tied for third, 27), take-aways forced (sixth, 58), scoring defense (ninth, 12.96 pts per game), and take-aways forced per game (10th, 2.52). In his first season coordinating (2021), he orchestrated a defensive unit that surrendered the least amount of points per game (11.7) since 1989, a period in which 28 of 30 Bomber seasons had winning records, a combined win record of .705, 16 post-season appearances and a national championship trophy. In addition to their national rankings, Ithaca's defense was first in the Liberty League in every major statistical category, which included scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, pass defense, defensive pass efficiency, and red zone defense.

A total of 14 defensive players earned All-Conference honors over 2021-2022 seasons, with eight being tabbed to the First Team, three on the Second Team, and three selected as Honorable Mentions. Of those 14 defensive players who claimed All-Conference accolades, six of them were defensive backs. Additionally, Warner’s defense allowed Matt DeSimpliciis to flourish into one of the best linebackers in the country. DeSimpliciis was named the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year in the Liberty League, as well as being named to D3football.com’s Second Team All-America and First Team All-Region-2 honors.

Before being promoted to defensive coordinator, Warner originally joined the Bombers' staff as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach in February 2019. During that time, he oversaw special teams units that produced the Liberty League Special Teams Player of the Year and All Liberty League First Teamer, kicker Nicholas Bahamonde. Warner’s units once again finished in the top 15 in the nation in five different categories: tied for 1st in the nation in blocked punts allowed (0), 5th in punt return defense (1.17 yards per return), 6th in touchbacks (29), 9th in blocked punts (4), and 15th in total blocked kicks.
