Brett Holinka rejoined the St. Thomas football coaching staff in March 2023 for his third year with the program as the cornerbacks coach. Holinka most recently served as the defensive coordinator at North Dakota since 2019 and was with St. Thomas as inside linebackers coach from 2010-12.
The Fighting Hawks finished the 2022 season 7-5 overall, No. 20 in the Stats Perform Poll and just outside the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Holinka coached the UND squad that led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in opponent fourth down conversion (46.2%), was second in red zone defense (80.8%) and sixth in passing defense (226.9 ypg).
Through his three seasons as defensive coordinator at UND, Holinka coached nine All-MVFC honorees. He initially joined the program in 2019 as the outside linebackers coach.
Prior to joining the UND coaching staff, Holinka spent the 2018 year as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at UMary. While in Bismarck, Holinka coached a Marauder team to 12 interceptions and 26 sacks which ranked sixth and ninth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, respectively.
Before the stint at UMary, Holinka spent three seasons at Winona State as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, guiding the Warriors to a 10-2 record in 2017 and a NCAA Division II playoff berth.
Holinka made stops at Rutgers (2012-2014) and St. Thomas (2010-11) to begin his coaching career, helping the Tommies reach the quarterfinals (2010) and semifinals (2011) of the NCAA Division III playoffs during each of his two seasons.
A 2009 graduate from the University of North Dakota with a degree in physical education and exercise science, Holinka was a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter for the Fighting Sioux football team from 2005-2008. He helped guide UND to a pair of North Central Conference (NCC) titles in 2005 and 2006 and was named to the All-NCC Honorable Mention team as a linebacker in 2007. Holinka concluded his career as a member of the inaugural Division I team in 2008, earning All-Great West honors.
