St. Thomas volleyball falls in five sets at Marquette to close non-conference

Sophomore outside hitter led St. Thomas with 25 kills while three Tommies total double-doubles
ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Thomas Volleyball fell in five sets (28-, 25-21, 20-25, 19-25, 10-15) at Marquette Saturday afternoon to close the non-conference schedule. Sophomore Anya Schmidt led the team with 18 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season and her seventh straight match with at least 12 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tommies outlasted Marquette 28-26 in the first set, finishing on an attack error that came off a block by Schmotzer and Kealy. Earlier, the Tommies erased a 17-14 deficit with help from a Schmidt kill, an Audrey Kocon service ace, and another Schmotzer-Kealy block to move ahead 19-18. After Marquette reached set point at 24-23, the Tommies answered with Schmidt kill and later closed the set at 28-26.
The Tommies turned the second set with a late 7-of-8 stretch, moving from a 16-18 deficit to a 23-19 lead. Kira Brundage served back-to-back aces during the run, Emory Brosnahan added a kill from Kealy, and Schmotzer and Schmidt combined on the block that made it 23-19. After Marquette scored two of the next three points, Schmotzer finished the set with a kill from Kealy for a 25-21 Tommies win.
Kills from Schmidt, Reilly Kurth, and Brosnahan helped the Tommies build a 5-1 lead to start the third set, and they later went up 18-16 on back-to-back kills by Kealy and Schmidt. Marquette answered with six straight points to move in front 22-18, and the Tommies could not close the gap in a 25-20 set loss.
The Tommies pushed the fourth set into the late stages, getting a Kurth kill and a Schmidt kill to draw even at 14-14 before a Marquette attack error put the Tommies ahead 15-14. After Schmotzer's kill brought the Tommies within 18-19, Marquette scored six of the final seven points to close out the set 25-19.
The Tommies spent the fifth set chasing after Marquette moved ahead 8-3. Kocon had three kills in the set, including points that brought the Tommies to 1-1, 6-9, and 7-11, but Marquette kept the separation. Schmotzer's kill made it 13-9 and a Marquette attack error made it 14-10 before Marquette closed the set 15-10.
