St. Thomas opens league play with road loss despite season-best .303 attack percentage
FARGO, N.D. — The St. Thomas volleyball offense was clicking to a season-best .303 attack percentage Thursday night but couldn't take down North Dakota State during a five-set battle (22-25, 25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 12-15) at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse in Fargo, N.D. Three Tommies totaled at least 15 kills each, a program first during the Division I era, while senior Morgan Kealy set a career-high 54 assists as one of three Tommies with a double-double on the night.
TOP TOMMIES
Addie Schmotzer
- Achieved a career-high 15 kills on a team-best .448 attack percentage.
- Recorded at least four total blocks in three consecutive matches, adding one solo and three assisted on Thursday, and finished with 17.5 points.
Anya Schmidt
- Hit 15 kills with 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
- Hit .205 from the floor and added two blocks on the defensive end.
- Scored at least 16 points in three consecutive matches, totaling 16.0 against the Bison.
- Recorded 15 or more kills in three straight matches and at least 12 in eight straight.
Ellie Gustafson
- Totaled 15 kills and 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career.
- Hit .359 from the floor and added one service ace for 16.0 points.
- Achieved a season-high hitting percentage of .359.
Morgan Kealy
- Set a new career high with 54 assists.
- Recorded 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and 52nd of her career.
Emory Brosnahan
- Tied a career high with six kills and one service ace.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Thomas responded to an early 9-4 hole in the first set, cutting the deficit to 13-11 and later tying the set at 14-14 with three straight kills from Schmotzer, Gustafson and Schmotzer. NDSU answered with four straight points, and St. Thomas made another late push from 22-17 to 22-20 behind an Emory Brosnahan kill. Schmotzer added a kill to hold off one set point before the Bison took the opener 25-22.
St. Thomas broke open the second set with a 7-of-8 stretch that moved the score from 6-4 to 13-5, with Audrey Kocon, Schmidt and Reilly Kurth each recording kills during the run. St. Thomas added another 7-of-8 push later in the set, including points on a Schmotzer block and a Gustafson kill. St. Thomas closed out the set 25-13.
St. Thomas erased an early 9-3 deficit and took the third set 25-23, closing with the final three points after NDSU moved ahead 23-22. Schmidt's kill from Kealy put St. Thomas at set point, and Kocon and Schmotzer combined on the block to finish the set. Earlier, Gustafson's service ace and Kocon's kill helped St. Thomas pull even at 11-11.
St. Thomas's main push in the fourth set came after it fell behind 14-7, using kills from Kurth, Brosnahan, Schmotzer and Schmidt before Brosnahan's ace brought it within 15-13. The Tommies later moved within 20-17 on an NDSU attack error, but the Bison closed out the set 25-19.
St. Thomas reached a 12-9 lead on Schmidt's kill from Kealy, but NDSU scored the final six points of the fifth set. St. Thomas got kills from Brosnahan, Schmotzer, Schmidt, Gustafson and Kurth in the set, with Kealy assisting several of them. The Bison finished the set 15-12.
