Lucas Van Vliet and Lucas Wahlin each tallied two goals
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas men's hockey (20-11-5) dispatched Lake Superior State from the Mason Cup Playoffs with an emphatic 5-2 victory on Saturday night. Lucas Wahlin scored his progam-record 21st goal to help the Tommies to their first 20-win season of the DI era.
Game two began similarly to the previous night with an early Tommie goal. This time it was defenseman Colton Jamieson from Dylan Godbout and Caige Sterzer at 2:02. The tally was Jamieson's first collegiate goal. Unlike last night, the Lakers answered quickly with a game-tying tally at 6:01. Both sides went 0-1 on the power play in the period, a trend that would continue throughout.
Lucas Wahlin came through with the 20th of his season from Ryan O'Neill at 10:41 to put the Purple back out in front. The Toms were 0-2 on the power play in the second and kept the Lakers off the scoreboard for their one advantage of the period.
Lake State tied the game at 15:48 in the third to threaten overtime for the second consecutive night. That was until Charlie Schoen chased down his own rebound and filtered a pass from below the goal line to Lucas Van Vliet who finished at 17:23. Bauer Berry earned the secondary assist. Van Vliet's goal was the decider, his team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season.
The Purple peppered in a pair of empty-net goals at 18:08 (Wahlin) and 19:15 (Van Vliet) to seal their spot in the Mason Cup Semis for the second year in a row. St. Thomas outshot Lake State 43-29. Carsen Musser was fantastic in net with 27 saves on 29 shots for his 10th win of the season. He is the third Tommie goaltender to record double digit wins in the DI era.
