Eighth run-rule win of season over Cal Baptist and 16th win overall against Portland State
BOISE, Idaho – Ella Cook and Cassidy Carby shined in St. Thomas softball's (16-6) game one run-rule victory over Cal Baptist (19-7) while Ava Kleinfeldt and Mya Tautges held off a late charge from Portland State (8-11) in their game two win.
Game One
The Tommies earned the lead in the top of the first inning and never gave it up before securing the four runs needed in the top of the sixth to win their eighth run-rule game of the season, 11-3.
Ella Cook got some run support early from a longtime teammate, Cassidy Carby. She belted her fifth home run of the season to right center to score Abbi Stierlen and Laken Lienhard. The Toms got their three runs on three walks and one hit. They finished the game with eight walks.
Cal Baptist answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first to capitalize on a fielding mishap by the Purple. Laken Lienhard got one of those runs back with a sacrifice fly to score Zoe Trotter in the second and Ella Cook helped herself with a two-run home run in the third.
Cook worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth while only allowing one with an inning-ending double play. She earned her fifth win of the season behind six innings with one earned run allowed on three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. She lowered her team-leading ERA to 1.48.
Carby added her sixth home run of the campaign in the fifth. Morgan Klein joined in on the fun with a home run in the sixth, and Zoe Trotter went back-to-back with Morgan. Cook brought home the 10th run of the game on an error and Carby finished the job with a sacrifice fly to score Addison Coffey.
Ella worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth to lock up the victory.
Game Two
Ella Cook got right back to producing from the DP spot in the lineup with an RBI in the first to score Avery Wukawitz who got on base via the walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. The Toms drew six walks in game two (14 between the two games). Cook doubled the Tommie lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly that scored Zoe Trotter.
Cassidy Carby continued her fruitful day at the plate with an RBI single up the middle in the third to bring Wukawitz around for a second time. Morgan Klein gave Ava Kleinfeldt a five-run lead with a two-run single before the end of the third.
Portland State crawled back with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning. Kleinfeldt worked into the seventh and stretched her unearned runless streak to 19 innings. Mya Tautges entered the game with runners on second and third with one out. She allowed one inherited runner to score before striking out the following two for her first save of the season.
