MANKATO, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas men's hockey team was right where it wanted to be in the final game of the regular season. The Tommies were back in the CCHA Mason Cup Championship, looking to avenge last year's loss to top-seeded Minnesota State. That was, sadly, not in the cards for St. Thomas, as the team fell to the Mavericks by a final score of 4-1.
The Tommies close the CCHA playoffs with an overall record of 21-12-5.
QUICK HITS:
- Dylan Godbout (Woobury, Minn. / Ohio State) scored the lone St. Thomas goal at 6:44 in the first period, with assists to Bauer Berry (Grand Forks, N.D. / Muskegon) and Attila Lippai (St. Paul, Minn. / Tri-City).
- Carsen Musser (Fairmont, Minn. / Colorado College) made 35 saves on 39 shots, while the Tommie offense was limited to just 30 shots on goal in Friday's championship.
RECAP:
First Period: Minnesota States scored the first goal of the game Michigan style, as Tristan Lemyre beat Musser stick side to give the Mavericks the early 1-0 lead. St. Thomas had a chance to tie in the 13th minute, when Campbell Cichosz was sent to the penalty box for tripping. While the Tommies were unable to convert on the power play, they did even the score at 16:44, as Dylan Godbout (Woodbury, Minn.) snuck one past Alex Tracy to make it 1-1 by the end of the first.
Second Period: St. Thomas and Minnesota State played 15 minutes of scoreless hockey in the second before a long shift in the Tommie defensive zone resulted in a goal for the Mavericks. At 15:05, Evan Murr beat Musser in the crease, giving Minnesota State a 2-1 lead late in the period.
Third Period: St Thomas looked to even things early in the third, but despite strong chances, the Tommies were unable to score the equalizer. With St. Thomas unable to even things up, the Mavericks extended their lead to 3-1 at 13:41 before a power play goal made it 4-1 Minnesota State with four minutes to go. That score would hold, despite a late push from the Tommies.
TOMMIE TIDBITS
