Lucas Wahlin and Lucas Van Vliet pick up CCHA monthly honors

Wahlin is the Forward of the Month for January and Van Vliet is Rookie of the Month
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas men's hockey won eight of nine games in January with outstanding individual performances up and down the lineup. Two of the Tommies' most productive players have been rewarded by the league with Player of the Month honors. Lucas Wahlin is the Forward of the Month and Lucas Van Vliet is Rookie of the month. This is the second time Wahlin has received the honor and the first time in program history a Tommie has received Rookie of the Month.
Lucas Wahlin led the Tommies with a +11 rating and three first goals. He added at least one point in all nine games this month and totaled six goals and seven assists for 13 points. He scored one shorthanded goal and one game winning goal. The third-year captain leads the CCHA with 18 goals this season and his .69 goals per game are tied for fifth in the nation. His 31 points are tied for third in the conference with his fellow honoree, Lucas Van Vliet. Wahlin also leads the entire CCHA with a +16 rating.
Van Vliet led the Tommies with 15 points with at least one in all nine games this month. He scored four goals and added 11 assists with two power play goals and one game-winner. Van Vliet became the first Tommie freshman to record a 30-point season and is near the top of the conference. He is fourth in points among the nation's freshmen this season behind Ethan Wyttenbach of Quinnipiac, Porter Martone of Michigan State, and Gavin McKenna of Penn State.
Wahlin's Forward of the Month is the second of his career (only Tommie with two), the second of the season (Alex Gaffney), and the fourth in program history. Van Vliet's Rookie of the Month is the first in program history. These are the fourth and fifth Player of the Months honors this season for the first place Tommies.

St. Thomas takes its longest road trip of the season to face off with the Bowling Green Falcons (14-6-6, 11-4-3) on February 6-7 at 6:07 p.m. CST. The Tommies are 3-5-0 all time at Slater Family Ice Arena.
