Tommies split double header with Wildcats

Tommies earn first win of 2026 in extra inning fashion
ABILENE, TEXAS – St. Thomas Baseball battle back to split the double header with Abilene Christian on Saturday. The Purple fell 6-5 in game one but battled back to take game two 11-10 in 10 innings.
Game one:
The Tommies opened the scoring by getting on the board in the top of the second. Chris Knowles led off the inning with a single and came around to score off a Wildcat error. Matthew Maulik then gave the Purple a 2-0 lead in the third by hitting a solo home run, the first Tommie home run of the season.
Abilene Christian then plated their first of the day in the bottom of the third off a RBI single.
St. Thomas plated three in the top of the eighth inning. One came from Tanner Recchio's RBI single, then Chris Knowles drove in two more after an RBI single of his own. The Wildcats responded scoring 5 to take the 6-5 lead.
Max Skilbeck tallied 8 strikeouts through 5.0 on the bump.
Game two:
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first plating one off a solo home run. St. Thomas responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Recchio's RBI double scored Maulik and Easton Fritcher. Abilene Christian then matched the Tommies two run in the bottom the second to take a 3-2 lead.
Maulik doubled in the fourth, was moved to third on Recchio's sac bunt and scored on a Joe Roder sac fly to knot the game at three. The game didn't stay tied for long as the Tommies added three more runs in the fifth off two hits, and one Wildcat error. Recchio and Zan Von Schlegell tallied the hits in the fifth. Abilene Chrisitan added two of their own in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to one.
The Wildcats then took a 8-6 lead after adding three in the bottom of the sixth. The Tommies brought the deficit back to one by plating a run in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Max Berrisford gave the Tommies a 9-8 lead after an RBI double in the top of the eighth. The Wildcats then tied the game at nine in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Adam Puder came up big in the top of the 10th after his single up the middle scored two giving the Tommies an 11-9 lead. The Wildcats threatened in the bottom half after scoring on a wild pitch the cut the deficit to one, but the Tommies held on for an 11-10 victory.

St. Thomas will take on Abilene Christian Feb. 16 for the series finale at Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark in Abilene, Texas.
