Jakub Altrichter scored the lone Tommie goal, shorthanded

ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Thomas men's hockey (0-1-0) lost to Air Force (1-0-0), 5-1 Friday. The Tommies put 44 shots on goal and won 43 faceoffs but converted only once.

The Tommies generated several early looks, including chances for Aiden Grossklaus, Attila Lippai and Cole Miller, before Air Force answered with a stretch of blocked shots and Carsen Musser saves that kept the game scoreless. After the teams traded unsuccessful power plays, Air Force broke through at 13:18 when Nick Sajevic scored at even strength off assists from Simon Houge and Brendan Gibbons for a 1-0 lead.

The Tommies pressed afterward with multiple shots on Dominik Wasik, including attempts from Lucas Van Vliet, Chase Cheslock, Kevin Anderson and Andrew ONeill, but Air Force added a power-play goal by Ren Morque at 17:36 after a Jakub Altrichter tripping penalty. Air Force carried the 2-0 lead through the end of the first period.

The Tommies generated several early looks around offsetting penalties, but Air Force broke through at 17:14 when Christian Kim scored unassisted at even strength to make it 3-0. The Tommies continued to create chances through the middle of the second period, with Bauer Berry, Nathan Pilling, Lucas Van Vliet and others putting attempts on Wasik, while Musser answered Air Force chances and Morque hit the pipe at 10:16. Air Force mounted another push with a series of attempts near the six-minute mark, but the Tommies blocked multiple shots before Musser stopped Aidan Willis at 3:24. Justin Kipkie's cross-checking penalty gave Air Force a late power play at 1:19, but Will Staring's interference penalty ended it at :37, and the Tommies finished the period still down 3-0.

While killing Quinn Rudrud's slashing penalty, the Tommies generated two chances before Altrichter scored shorthanded off a Miller assist at 16:27 to make it 3-1. The Tommies went back on the power play at 14:47 and put two shots on Wasik during the advantage, then continued trading chances with Air Force through the middle of the third period, including Rudrud hitting the pipe at 7:18. After the Tommies called timeout and pulled Musser with 3:13 left, Sam Stitz scored an empty-net goal for Air Force at 3:03. Sajevic added another empty-net goal at 1:57, and Air Force closed out a 5-1 win.
