8/31/2025 5:12:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Tommies tied Big East foe, Blue Demons, 1-1 behind Lakhlifi’s third goal of the season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Soccer (2-0-2) continued its best start to a season of the DI era with a 1-1 tie on the road against the DePaul Blue Demons (1-0-3) of the Big East on Sunday at Wish Field. Yanis Lakhlifi scored his Summit League leading third goal of the season in the first half while Moritz Krenc and his defense staved off a late-charging DePaul squad.

Scoring Summary
First Half
-It took the Tommies just six minutes and 39 seconds to score the game's first goal (for the third time this season). Yanis Lakhlifi headed in a front-door ball off a perfectly placed rainbow pass from his compatriot, Mathis Guffroy. Simon Klevberg was also credited for an assist, the first point of his Tommie career.

Second Half
-DePaul answered just over 13 minutes into the second half. The unbeaten Blue Demon's goal was the third in as many games from striker Keagan Pace.

Quick Hits
-Simon Klevberg, Merrick Schaefer, Mathis Guffroy, Ronan Selbo, Baraka Kania, and Gabriel Verona all played 90 minutes for the second game in a row.
-The Tommies put just three shots on goal (Guffroy, Klevberg, Lakhlifi) and allowed four shots on goal (three saved by Krenc). DePaul led the possession battle with 17 overall shots to the Toms' six.
-DePaul received four yellow cards. Ronan Selbo was the only recipient of a caution for the Tommies (62nd minute), it was the first of his career.

Tommie Tidbits
-This is the longest unbeaten streak to begin a season of the DI era (four games, 2-0-2). It is also just the second four-game unbeaten streak of the DI era (8/29-9/14 of last season).
-This is the seventh three-goal season in DI program history and Lakhlifi has done it in just four games. Fairs Colic's six-goal season last year is the only one above the three-goal mark for the Tommies. Yanis is currently on pace for over 12 goals.
-It has taken Mathis Guffroy just four games to tally seven points, he is the quickest to seven points in program history. The next-quickest was Faris Colic in 2024, it took him six games.
-Simon Klevberg tallied his first point as a Tommie after 17 games.
-Ronan Selbo and Gabriel Verona have played in all 360 minutes of the 2025 season.
-The Tommies are now 2-0-1 when scoring first this season.

Quoting Coach Lowery
"Today was a really good test against a quality Big East opponent. The guys executed the game plan very well. The trust and the confidence is grow and I am encouraged both individually and collectively with our growth at this point. It was a good step and we keep moving forward being unbeaten in four."

Up Next

This is the Toms' first trip to Lindenwood having played them twice out at South Field to a 1-1 record. The Lions got the better of the Purple last season by a score of 2-1.
