Tommie Softball drops doubleheader in Madison

4/8/2025 8:01:00 PM | Softball

The Badgers took both games of the doubleheader over Tommie Softball

MADISON, Wisc. – St. Thomas Softball (19-15 overall, 4-2 Summit League) will have to wait until its home opener to win its 20th game of the season after dropping both halves of its doubleheader against the Wisconsin Badgers (24-15 overall, 6-7 BIG 10) on Tuesday at Goodman Diamond.

Game One Recap
The Tommies worked a pair of walks to begin the contest on a couple of nice at-bats from Laken Lienhard and Avery Wukawitz but came up empty on the scoresheet. The Badgers pounced early with five runs in the bottom half of the first.

St. Thomas scored its only runs of the affair in the second inning after Kaitlyn Raymond led off with a walk. Raymond advanced to third on an Adrianna Young double and then scored on a Kameron Monson single. Ruby Moore followed Monson up with an RBI single to score Young. The Toms' rally came to an abrupt end on an unlucky inning ending double play.

After hitting the first batter of the inning and allowing an RBI triple, the Tommies' starting pitcher, Christina Crawford, was relieved by Keira Murphy. The junior gave up the inherited runner on third and then four more for a six-run second.

The Badgers added four more in the third to get on top of the Tommies, 15-2.

Laken Lienhard and Adrianna Young each reached base safely for the Purple twice.

Game Two Recap
The Tommies bounced back after a frustrating first game with five runs in the first three innings of the second. Three runs scored in the top of the second on a wild pitch, a fielder's choice, and a Laken Lienhard single up the middle.

Anna Caruso scored the first run; Zoe Trotter earned the RBI on the fielder's choice to score Kaitlyn Raymond and then Abbi Stierlen passed home on the Lienhard comebacker.

The Purple added two runs to their lead in the top of the third with a pair of RBI singles from Raymond and Kameron Monson. Ava Kleinfeldt worked well with the lead and struck out four through the first seven batters faced. Unfortunately, the freshman gave up a bloop and a blast before striking out another and pushing the game to the fourth with the Tommies out in front, 5-2.

Nobody scored again until the bottom of the sixth inning when, with two outs, the Badgers reached on an infield single, then earned a walk, and then another infield single, followed by a game-deciding grand slam. Kleinfeldt struck out her eighth of the game to end the sixth.

Jenna Kuhn led off the top of the seventh with a pinch-hit single and Laken Lienhard walked to put two on. Avery Wukawitz bunted the re-entered Ruby Moore to third and the pinch running Miley Wichman to second on a sacrifice. After a strikeout, Ella Cook just missed extra bases on a flyball to right field to end the game.
