Tommie Softball fell in five innings to the #3 Oklahoma Sooners
NORMAN, Okla. – St. Thomas Softball (19-12 overall, 4-2 Summit League) fell behind early and came up short in its comeback effort against the reigning national champion (four times over) #3 Oklahoma Sooners (33-3, 9-3 SEC) on Thursday night at Love's Field in a game that was moved up 21 hours due to forecasted rain on Friday.
Recap
The Tommies took it to the juggernaut Sooners in the first inning with a leadoff single from Laken Lienhard and a five pitch walk from Avery Wukawitz, but both were left stranded after three consecutive caught balls.
Ella Cook worked in the circle to start and tossed a scoreless frame with her only strikeout of the evening against the first batter she faced. The redshirt junior could only hold the explosive bats of Oklahoma down for so long and the high-powered offense pounced for an eight run second.
Christina Crawford came in with two runners on during the crooked-numbered frame and allowed both inherited runners to cross along with two of her own allowed. The Tommies got one run back in the top of the third inning on a Cassidy Carby double down the left field line to score Ruby Moore.
Crawford tossed a scoreless bottom of the third but ran into trouble again in the fourth. She gave up two long balls, a three-run shot and a solo homer before she was relieved by Ava Kleinfeldt. The freshman worked out of the inning scoreless by getting the one out required.
St. Thomas rallied in the top of the fifth to try and stave off the eight-run rule with a Jenna Kuhn lead-off pinch hit home run followed by a two RBI double from Cassidy Carby to score Avery Wukawitz and Kyllie Weingart and trim the Sooner lead to eight. That is all the bats could muster before falling 12-4 in five innings.
Up Next
The Tommies will be dodging rain drops to play the University of Central Florida Knights on Saturday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Love's Field in Norman, Oklahoma for their final game of the weekend.
