Softball takes series from South Dakota State

4/13/2025 2:50:00 PM | Softball

Ava Kleinfeldt worked another complete game in the Tommies’ 6-2 victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (21-16 overall, 6-3 Summit League) took game three from South Dakota State (21-20, 6-3) to win the Summit League conference series for the first time in program history with a 6-2 win on Sunday at South Field.

Recap
Ava Kleinfeldt asserted herself as one of the best pitchers in the Summit League for the second consecutive start with another complete game performance against one of the conference's best offenses. The freshman allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts on Sunday after completing a shutout on Saturday against the Jackrabbits.

Those two runs were kept within the confines of one inning when SDSU scored the game's first runs in the second. The Jacks began the inning with three consecutive hits, a single followed by a pair of RBI doubles before Kleinfeldt rallied for two strikeouts to finish off the inning.

The Tommies mounted a comeback from that point forward that began in the bottom of the second. Kaitlyn Raymond walked with one out, moved up to second on an Abbi Stierlen single, and then to third on a Kameron Monson single. Zoe Trotter bounced a ball to the left side of the infield and scored Raymond from third before she reached on a fielder's choice.

Avery Wukawitz's third inning hit by pitch was the catalyst for the Toms' second run scoring frame. She advanced to second on a groundout and then scored from there on an infield error that allowed Ella Cook to reach.

Three runs for the Tommies in the fourth were the most for either team on Sunday. Trotter led off the productive frame with a triple to right center field. She came around to score on a Ruby Moore groundout to first to give the Purple the lead, 3-2. Lienhard walked and was replaced by Miley Wichman. The freshman scored on a triple to left field by Avery Wukawitz. The Tommie center fielder scored on a Cassidy Carby infield single.

Carby doubled home Lienhard in the bottom of the sixth to add on an insurance run. Kleinfeldt did not need the extra run, she worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

St. Thomas played flawless softball on the defensive side for the second time this weekend. The Tommies are 13-2 this season when they do not commit an error.
