Tommies fall 4-2 in regulation after advancing to championship for first time
MANKATO, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey's (19-14-5) program-best run came to an end on Friday night in the Mason Cup Final game as it fell 4-2 to the #15 Minnesota State Mavericks (27-8-3) at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Event Center in front of a nearly sold out crowd.
Matthew Gleason scored the Tommies' first goal and his linemate, Liam Malmquist scored the 20th of his season, a program record. Jake Sibell's unreal 12 game win streak was snapped after, he ends his final season of college hockey with a 12-5-3 record, a program record.
Recap
The score after one may have been 0-0, but the first period in Mankato was filled with plenty of action. Both the Tommies and Mavericks saw plenty of Grade A scoring chances, but Jake Sibell (Isanti, Minn. / Niagara) and Alex Tracy were simply too good in net. The two goalies turned away a combined 20 shots in the opening 20 minutes of play, highlighted by 12 early saves by Sibell. The senior stopped every single shot tossed in his direction, preserving a 0-0 tie late into the period, giving St. Thomas plenty of time to score the first goal of the game. In fact, all four Tommie lines had a chance to score the opening goal of the game but never found the back of the net, resulting in the 0-0 draw after one.
It took nearly seven minutes for a team to break the 0-0 draw, and that team was, in fact, St. Thomas. It was none other than Matthew Gleason (St. Paul, Minn. / Colorado College) who committed the crime, blasting the puck past Tracy stick side to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead at 6:56 in the second. Minnesota State, though, scored the equalizer at 10:40 in the second after Chase Foley (Mendota Heights, Minn. / Colorado College) was sent to the box for tripping.
A scrum in front of the St. Thomas net eventually resulted in a 2-1 Maverick lead, as Kaden Bohlsen slipped the puck past a diving Sibell and scrambling Tommie defense to give the home team a lead. St. Thomas in a turn had a chance to tie the game before the end of the second, as Minnesota State was called for interference with 2:14 remaining in the period. Like the Mavericks, the Tommies scored the equalizer, as Liam Malmquist (Edina, Minn. / Wisconsin) evened the score at 2-2 with his 20th goal of the season.
There was much to do about nothing to open the third period, as neither team could score the go-ahead goal in the first 10 minutes. Minnesota State, however, scored at 10:24 to make it 3-2 Mavericks, forcing St. Thomas to play catch up for the remainder of the period. However, that score would hold, until the Tommies were frantically forced to pull Sibell with under a minute left in regulation. With Sibell freshly on the bench, Minnesota State scored an empty netter, securing its Mason Cup victory 4-2.

The Tommies will head to the offseason after a program-best season and will move into a brand new state-of-the-art arena in the Fall of 2025.
