The Hawkeyes took game one 3-1 and game two 1-0 in eight innings
IOWA CITY, Iowa – St. Thomas Softball's (14-9) program-best nine game win streak came to an end on Wednesday after dropping a pair of close games to the Iowa Hawkeyes (16-8) at Bob Pearl Field.
Iowa City native, Ella Cook pitched a gem in game two going all 7.1 innings without allowing an earned run she also cracked a pair of doubles in the 1-0 loss.
Game One Recap
Kaitlyn Raymond plated the only run of the midweek series for the Tommies in the first inning of game one when she doubled to left field to score Cassidy Carby. The Toms finished with five hits overall including two doubles from Raymond and one from Ella Cook.
Ava Kleinfeldt tossed two scoreless innings to start her afternoon but ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third and fourth. The freshman allowed back-to-back one out singles and allowed a runner to advance on an error of her own doing. The Hawkeyes notched their first run on their third base hit of the inning. Kleinfeldt induced an unassisted double play to Ruby Moore at second to limit the damage.
Her fourth inning jam began with a two-out hit-by-pitch and then a second error, this time by Moore. Iowa doubled its lead on the lone hit of the inning. Both runs were unearned on the ledger of Kleinfeldt.
Iowa's offense put some pieces together in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff walk followed by a single and an RBI double. Coach Trotter made the call to the bullpen to bring in Christina Crawford and the senior induced three straight outs.
Adrianna Young drew a hit-by-pitch with one out in the top of the seventh and then advanced to second on a Kameron Monson walk, but neither would go an farther after consecutive Tommie strikeouts to end the ballgame.
Game Two Recap
Ella Cook was the story in game two. She tossed 7.1 innings without an earned run and supplied both of the Toms' extra-base hits with two doubles.
The only time the Tommies' offense got a runner to third base was after a successful sacrifice bunt by Abbi Stierlen to move Ruby Moore up a base after she was placed on second to begin the top of the eighth inning.
Cook allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out none. The Tommies' defense played well behind the Iowa City native with an inconsequential error in the bottom of the fourth inning.
This was just the second time the Tommies have been shutout this season.
