Liam led the Toms with 13 points during the team’s winningest month in program history
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association released its monthly honors and named senior Liam Malmquist CCHA Forward of the Month, the first Tommie forward to be honored with a monthly award.
Malmquist, a native of Edina, Minn. was an integral part of the Tommies 7-1-1 record in January. He started the month on a six-game point streak with multiple points in five of those six games. He led the Tommies with six goals and 13 points and was second on the team with a +8 rating.
He recorded the second hat trick in program history in the Tommies' 9-6 victory of Ferris State on the 10th. He also added his NCAA-leading third shorthanded goal on the 17th in the Tommies' 4-3 win over Lake Superior State.
Liam became the fastest Tommie to 30 points during his 24th game, 12 games faster than Lucas Wahlin last season. He also broke the single-season program points record on the 18th with his 31st and 32nd point tallies. He averaged 1.44 points per game during January and is currently second in the conference with 1.14 points per game this season. That mark is 19th in the nation. He leads the CCHA in points (32) and assists (20) and is 4th in the conference with 12 goals.
The award is Malmquist's third of this month, he was named CCHA Forward of the Week twice during January. It is his first monthly honor and the first CCHA Forward of the Week honor in program history. The award is the third monthly honor of the season for the Tommies (Mason Poolman and Chase Foley each with Defenseman of the Month honors), a new program high.
Liam was also nominated for the distinguished Hobey Baker Memorial Trophy award earlier this month. You can vote for him at https://hobeybaker.com/vote.
