Sajevic scores lone goal in 5-1 defeat

COLUMBUS, OHIO –  The St. Thomas women's hockey team traveled to Ohio State for game one of the WCHA First Round of playoffs. Ohio State (26-6-3, 19-6-3 WCHA) scored early in the opening frame. Holding the lead the entirety of regulation, the Buckeyes defeated St.  Thomas (9-24-2, 6-21-1 WCHA) on Friday evening.

RECAP:
Ohio State controlled the puck for most of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead just ninety seconds into the game. However, St. Thomas was not without its own offensive chances. Rylee Bartz and Cara Sajevic  both had grade "A" chances midway through the first period, with both Sajevic and Sadie Lindsay being credited with shots on goal. However, the Tommies struggled to spend extended time in the Buckeyes defensive zone, and Ohio State took advantage, peppering starting netminder Dani Strom with 13 shots in the first period alone.

After scoring a second goal around the 13-minute mark, the Buckeyes entered the second period with a 2-0 advantage over St. Thomas. Ohio State quickly made it 3-0 in the second, as the No. 2 offense in the NCAA continued to pelt Strom with shot and shot. The first year turned away 15 shots before the 10-minute mark of the second period, keeping the Tommies within striking distance at 3-0 by the media timeout.

It looked like St. Thomas cut the three-goal deficit to a two-goal deficit with under five minutes remaining in the second however, the Tommies goal was stripped away as they were called for goalie interference, reverting the score back to 3-0 Buckeyes.

All goals in the final frame were scored on special teams. Both the Tommies and Buckeyes added a goal on the power play, as Sajevic tallied her sixth of the season for the Purple. Ohio State added a shorthanded goal, ultimately defeating the Tommies 5-1 in game one.

Dani Strom faced 37 shots and made 32 saves Saturday, her 16th 30+ save performance this season.
