Summit League Championship Results
IOWA CITY, IOWA – It was a historic weekend for the University of St. Thomas swim and dive team at the Summit League Championships. In their fourth year as a Division I program, the Tommies put together their best finishes and performances at the conference meet, with both the men's and women's teams earning their highest finishes in the standings in program history. The St. Thomas women's swim and dive scored its most points ever at the Summit League Championships, finishing in fourth with 395 total points. The men also earned over 300 points, finishing in fifth with a four-day score of 352.
WOMEN'S RESULTS:
The final day of the swimming and diving championships proved to be one of the best for the Tommie women, as they earned their first top-4 finish at the Summit League Championships in the DI era. In total, nine swimmers qualified for either "A" or "B" finals of their respective events, including Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville). The sophomore continued to make waves in her second year at St. Thomas, carding yet another top-8 finish in a distance freestyle event. Hayes earned a fifth place finish in the 1650 freestyle, the longest event of the weekend, setting the program record in the process. Hayes' time of 17:14.45 in the final crushed the previous program record by nearly five full seconds, allowing Hayes to leave Iowa with program records in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle.
The Tommies found plenty of success in the short races as well, starting in the 200 backstroke. First year Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge) qualified for the "A" final of the race thanks to her time of 2:03.03 in prelims, while senior Sophie Curran (Minneapolis, Minn. / Edina) qualified for the "B" final thank sot her time of 2:03.47 in prelims. Davis would ultimately finish eighth in finals, clocking a time of 2:03.45 in the evening's finals session, and Curran would go on to swim the second fastest time in program history. Curran won the "B" final with a PR time of 2:01.46, which ranks second all-time to Emma Paulson's program record of 1:56.33.
Like Davis, first year Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) excelled at the Summit League Championships, qualifying for the "A" final in the 100 freestyle after earning All-Conference honors in the 50 freestyle earlier in the week. Undem qualified for the "A final after swimming the race in 51.33, a PR for the first year, and would finish eighth in the race with a time of 51.83. Teammate Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) qualified for the "B" final with a time of 51.92 and would ultimately finish in 16th place in the race.
Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) and Ashley Plantenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) continued to dominate the breaststroke races for St. Thomas. The duo qualified for the "B" final in the 200 breaststroke, earning their top-16 placements with times of 2:24.04 and 2:24.29 respectively. In the final, Jones finished in 13th with a time of 2:23.23, while Plantenberg finished 15th thanks to her time of 2:23.94.
Emily Wooden's (Chino Hills, Calif. / Ayala) return to the pool was capped off with an impressive finish in the 200 butterfly. The junior swam the second fastest time in program history in prelims at 2:05.38 to earn a spot in the "A" final. She would finish eighth in finals, clocking a time of 2:06.87. Teammate Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) qualified for the "B" final in the same race thanks to her time of 2:11.78. She would save two seconds off in the final, finishing 11th thanks to her time of 2:09.68.
The 400 freestyle relay team capped off an impressive weekend for the Tommies with a fourth place finish in the race. The team of Undem, Forsberg, Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) and Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) knocked two seconds off their seeded time of 3:29.59, finishing the relay in 3:27.01.
MEN'S RESULTS:
The St. Thomas men continued to see records fall on the fourth and final day of competition, starting with the 1650 freestyle. Freshman swimmer Tucker Holmes (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) joined teammate Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) as the only swimmers in program history to swim the event in under 16 minutes, clocking a time of 15:56.85 in the final. The time was good enough or a seventh place finish in the race and broke Foti's program record of 15:58.34.
Holmes wasn't the only swimmer breaking program records in the pool for St. Thomas on Saturday. Junior Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) finally took down the program record in the 200 backstroke, qualifying for the "A" final with the fastest time in program history at 1:46.02. The time broke the longest standing program record in Tommie swim and dive history, as Peter Mullee owned the fastest time in the 200 backstroke since 2009. Jensen, now the record holder, would go on to finish eighth in the final.
Teammates Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen) and Holmes also qualified for either the "A" or "B" final of the 200 backstroke. Becker would finish sixth in the "A" final thanks to his time of 1:48.56, while Holmes finished 16th thanks to his time of 1:55.51 in the "B" final.
Top-10 times were recorded in the 100 freestyle as well. While neither Willy Coborn (St. Paul, Minn. / North St. Paul) nor Morgan Gillard (Woodbury, Minn./ East Ridge) could knock Mullee from his pedestal, both earned top-10 times in prelims of the race. Coborn would qualify for the "B" final with his time of 45.72, the second fastest in program history, and was joined by Gillard thanks to his time of 45.91, the fourth fastest in program history. Coborn finished 14th, clocking an identical time of 45.72 in the final, while Gillard finished 16th with a time of 46.49.
Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) and Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) earned places in the 200 breaststroke finals, with Sacor qualifying for the "A" final thanks to a PR tome of 2:02.07. Sacor would shave one second off his time in finals, earning a seventh place finish thanks to his time of 2:-01.38. That time is the second fastest in program history and the closest any swimmer has come to an under two minute time since 2023.
Richard qualified for the "B" final in Saturday's race thanks to his time of 2:06.36 in prelims. He shaved over two full seconds from his morning time, finishing in 10th with a time of 2:04.08.
Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) was the final individual swimmer to qualify for a final on Saturday, earning a spot in the "B" final of the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.76. He finished 14th with a time of 1:53.51.
St. Thomas' three divers all scored for the team during the 3-meter competition. Ben Linde (Andover, Minn. / Andover) was the team's highest finisher, claiming 11th with a score of 247.60. Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) finished 12th with a score of 241.20, while Julius Krumenacher (Waukesha, Wis. /
Waukesha North) finished 15th with a score of 197.55.
There was one final record broken in the final event of the meet: the 400 relay. The Tommies top team of Jensen, Coborn, Gillard and Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) broke the program record set at the conference championship in 2024, earning a sixth place finish with a time of 3:02.82. The time was over a full second faster than the team's seeded time of 3:03.86 and earned 26 points towards the team's overall score.
