Tommies set to face Bulldogs in WCHA match up

ST. PAUL, MINN.- The No.15 St. Thomas women's hockey team (8-5, 3-5) returns to St. Paul as they play host to No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (8-4-0, 4-4,0) for a WCHA series.  

 

Friday's game will be played at 5 p.m. in The Tommie Ice Plex, and Saturday's puck drop will be at 2 p.m. in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.

Last Time Out 

The Tommie offense was firing on all cylinders last Friday as they tallied 5 goals in their 5-0 victory over the Bemidji State Beavers. This is the most goals the Tommies have scored in a WCHA contest this season. Chloe BoreenJenessa GazdikRylee Bartz, and Ilsa Lindaman all netted goals. Goaltender Julia Minotti posted her second shutout of the season, while tallying 17 saves. 

 

St. Thomas then fell 2-1 to the Beavers on Saturday. Chloe Boreen scored her second goal of the weekend. 

 

WCHA Honors  

The Purple earned two WCHA weekly honors this past week as Rylee Bartz earned her second forward of the week honor of the season, while Jenessa Gazdik tallied the first defender of the week honor of her career. 

Rylee Bartz – Forward of the week (Sept. 22 & Nov. 10) 

Ellah Hause – Defender of the week (Oct. 20) 

Jenessa Gazdik –Defender of the week (Nov. 10) 

 

WCHA Leader Board 

Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger sit one and two respectively in the face-off wins/ total face off category in the WCHA standings. Bartz has won 174 of 286 and Boerger 170 of 255.  

The pair is also on the leader board for face-off winning percentage as Boerger is in third with .667 and Bartz in fourth at .608. 
 
Ilsa Lindaman is tied for first in the league in power play goals with three on the season. 

The Tommie d-core has five players in the top 10 of the blocked shots leader board. Jennessa Gazdik leads the way tied for first with 23, followed by Ellah Hause with 22 in fourth, JuliAnna Gazdik in eighth with 20, Cailin Mumm in ninth with 19, and Haley Maxwell in tenth with 17. 

 

National Rankings 

The St. Thomas Tommies jumped into the national polls back on October 20th for the first time of the Division I era and are currently ranked No. 15 in the both the USA Hockey Poll and USCHO poll.  

 

Point Streak 

After tallying at least one point in each of the last two games, Chloe Boreen and Rylee Bartz enter the weekend riding a two-game point streak. 

 

DI Era Record Holders 

Rylee Bartz (56), Ella Boerger (56), and Madison Brown (46) make up the top three in career points. 

Ella Boerger (36), and Rylee Bartz (31), round out the top two in D1 era assists.  

 

Scouting the Bulldogs 

The Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth currently hold a 8-4 overall record and a 4-4 in WCHA play.  

The No. 5 UMD Bulldogs have not played a game since Nov. 1 when they completed the road sweep over the No. 10 St. Cloud State Huskies. 

Statistically speaking, the Bulldogs are led by senior forward Thea Johansson who has netted 10 goals on the season. On the defensive side of the puck, UMD is led by graduate student Ashley Messier who has totaled 23 blocks through 12 games. In goal the Bulldogs are led by junior Eve Gascon who has started 10 games for the Bulldogs are recorded three shutouts. 

 

History with the Bulldogs 

The Tommies and Bulldogs have faced 16 times in the past five seasons, and the Purple holds a 2-13-1 all-time record against UMD. Most notably the two Tommie wins came last season as they swept the then No. 4 Bulldogs at home. That series was a thrilling one as Tommies took game one 3-2 and followed it up but a 4-3 overtime victory to secure the sweep. This was St. Thomas's first sweet over a nationally ranked program.
