Men’s Hockey finishes off season sweep of St. Cloud State

Lucas Wahlin led the way with three points for 100 in his career

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four years ago, Lucas Wahlin and his fellow class of believers signed their national letter of intent to a 3-32-1 first-year DI team that played in a high school rink. Tonight, that same class, headed by Wahlin and his 100 career points, swept a future NCHC foe for the first time in their on-campus 4,000+ seat arena.

The Tommies (4-5-1 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) took down the St. Cloud State Huskies (6-6-0, 1-3-0 NCHC) three goals to one on Tuesday night at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.

Period Summary

First Period
-St. Cloud State fired the first salvo at 6:38 off the stick of one of the country's leading scorers, Austin Burnevik. The Huskies scored on their fourth shot, but did not get another by freshman netminder, Will Ingemann.
-It was another freshman that contributed late in the period to tie the game. Attila Lippai sent home his first career goal at 17:28 from Charlie Schoen and Lucas Wahlin (point #98).
-The Tommies outshot St. Cloud 16-7 in the period.

Second Period
-St. Thomas thrived in the face-off circle in the second with 11 wins on 16 tries.
-One of those face-off wins led to Alex Gaffney's team-leading seventh goal at 11:22. Wahlin (point #99) won the draw directly back to Gaffney who took a pair of strides toward the high slot and ripped a shot off the elbow and in to take the lead.
-Just a few minutes later, Gaffney returned the favor with a seeing-eye pass through the neutral zone to a streaking Wahlin. The senior captain had no one to beat but the goalie and went top shelf on the break at 14:28 (point #100).

Third Period
-St. Cloud State answered in the third with sustained pressure and two power plays but Ingemann and the Tommie defense did not break.
-He stopped all 13 shots on goal to bring his total up to a career high 31 saves in his second career win.
-The Tommies held the NCAA-leading Husky power play scoreless on three tries in the game. St. Thomas' power play also went 0-3.
