Historic night for Men’s Hockey; 11 goals scored in victory

Eight different Tommies scored on Friday night against the Air Force Falcons

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Not since going Division I had the St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (2-2-0) scored more than nine goals in a game. The Tommies scored a blistering 11 in a nine-goal victory on the road against the Air Force Falcons (0-2-1) on Friday night at Cadet Ice Arena.
 
The Toms scored five in the first, four in the second, and two in the third.
 
Period Summary
 
First Period
-Casy Laylin got the history started with a goal 1:20 into the contest from Chase Cheslock and Ryan O'Neill. The first goal of the season for Laylin.
-Alex Gaffney struck on the power play at 11:46 from Casy Laylin and Lucas Van Vliet. The Harvard transfer added a point in the fourth consecutive game to begin his Tommie career. It was Laylin's second time recording two points (last on 2/28/25 against Michigan Tech) and Van Vliet earned an assist for the third straight game.
-Josh Giuliani scored his first collegiate goal at 16:42 from Gaffney and Van Vliet. Giuliani fit right in on the Toms' top scoring line in lieu of their senior captain, Lucas Wahlin.
-Nick Williams potted his first in purple at 17:04 from Caige Sterzer and Luke Schelter. Schelter played in his first collegiate game and made an impact for the Tommies.
-Jake Braccini capped off one of the best single periods in program history with a goal at 17:40 from Dylan Godbout and Nick Williams.
 
Second Period
-Gaffney got on the board again at 5:29 from Ryan O'Neill and Mason Poolman. The second straight game with a point for O'Neill while Poolman finished with a team-leading +5 rating.
-Dylan Godbout scored his first career collegiate goal at 10:34 from Charlie Schoen and Braccini.
-Giuliani scored his second career goal under a period after his first, this time on the power play at 12:26 from Gaffney and Cheslock. Gaffney's assist was his fourth point of the contest, just the second time he has done that in his 104-game career. Cheslock recorded a multi-point game for the third time in his career.
-Luc Laylin added his first of the season at 19:22 from Godbout and Schoen. Godbout's first career multi-point game.
 
Third Period
-Luc Laylin scored again at 5:39 to put the Toms up 10-0, a program record. Sterzer and Schoen added the assists on the play. It was Schoen's third career three point game.
-Air Force finally broke through at 8:41 while shorthanded to dash Aaron Trotter's shutout bid, they added another at 16:13 to make it an eight goal game.
-Nathan Pilling scored the Tommies' first shorthanded goal of the season from Cole Miller. They were the 15th and 16th Tommies to earn a point on Friday.
 
Tommie Tidbit
-The last time Air Force gave up 10+ goals was in 2002, against a Miami team coached by Rico Blasi. Coach Blasi is the only coach to put up 10 goals on the Falcons in the 21st century. He has now done it twice.
