Oral Roberts delivers Women’s Soccer conference setback
9/29/2024 6:07:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Golden Eagles scored the game’s only goal in the first half
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Tommies (4-5-2 overall, 0-1-1 Summit League fell by a score of 1-0 to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (6-5-2 overall, 1-0-1 Summit League) on home turf on Sunday afternoon. The Toms had won two consecutive games against Oral Roberts but a Golden Eagles squad that finished third in the Summit League a season ago was too much to handle on this occasion.
Kendell Ellis made her first start in nearly two years between the posts and recorded six saves on seven shots faced. Annie Mulcahy, Ellie Tempero, Sophia Barjesteh, and Abby Brantner all played the entirety of the match.
Recap
The Tommies' offensive woes continued Sunday making it 342 minutes since Camryn Rintoul scored their last goal against the Western Illinois Leathernecks on September 13th. The Purple did not lack for chances on Sunday but could not best reigning Summit Leak Peak Performer of the Week, Alexa Riefer who recorded a clean sheet while making six saves. Riefer leads the conference in saves and showcased her tremendous ability primarily in the 63rd minute when Melina Knowles nearly equalized the game if not for a sprawling diving stop from the junior.
Overall, the Tommies out chanced the Golden Eagles, 15-14 in shots but fell behind in the shots on goal (7-6 ORU) and corner kick (8-2 ORU) categories. Oral Roberts came away on top in the stat category that counted the most, goals. Samantha Guzman scored on their very first shot in the 17th minute. The goal was Guzman's fifth of the season and third in two games of conference play. She headed in a perfectly aired ball from Julia Thasaphong.
Oral Roberts, a side that leads the Summit League with 18 yellow cards, fouled the Tommies 14-9 but the Purple were the ones assessed two yellow cards: Lexi Huber in the 79th minute and Sophia Barjesteh in the 83rd.
Up Next
The Tommies do not take to the field again until Sunday, October 6 when they face off with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (8-2-1 overall, 1-0-0 Summit League) at South Field. The Purple head into their game with the Jackrabbits without a win in conference play.
