Junior middle blocker hit .565 with one error and six total blocks Thursday night
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Junior Megan Wetter put together a strong night overall as St. Thomas fell during its Summit League opener Thursday night to North Dakota State, 3-1 (21-25, 28-26, 18-25, 20-25). Wetter tied for the team lead with 14 kills and paced the defense with six blocks as the Tommies drop to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in the Summit League.
After an early run by NDSU to start the match, St. Thomas went on a 6-2 run, behind three kills and a solo block from Wetter. Despite the Tommies hitting .367 in set one with three attack errors, the Bison finished with a .379 hitting percentage to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
St. Thomas flipped the script in set two with the first four points, which began on a block from Addie Schmotzer and Lauren Galvin, to force an NDSU timeout. The Bison scored the next four points but the Purple held the advantage until late in the set. Back-to-back kills from Wetter and Galvin gave the Tommies a 23-21 lead before three straight Bison points brought up set point. A block from Schmotzer and Galvin sparked a late 4-1 run to win the set, which ended on a block from Tezra Rudzitis and Wetter.
Rudzitis opened the third set with St. Thomas' first three points, all kills, before NDSU went on a run for its final lead of the game. After a 7-7 tie, the Bison went on a 10-3 run for a seven-point lead that was extended to a set-high eight, 24-16. The Bison recorded a match-high .417 hitting percentage with just two attack errors en route to taking its second set win.
The late set momentum from NDSU continued into the fourth and final set despite St. Thomas holding an early 5-3 lead. The Bison scored six straight points and held off multiple Tommie runs to lead the rest of the night.
