Kealy records second consecutive double-double in front of crowd of 4,847

MINNEAPOLIS -- St. Thomas Volleyball challenged No. 19 Minnesota Tuesday night before falling to the cross-town Gophers 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 21-25) at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis.

Sophomore Morgan Kealy recorded her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season as the Tommies fall to 3-4 overall. Kealy led the Toms with 20 assists to go along with 10 digs while junior Ella Voegele paced the team with 12 digs. With one block tonight, junior Megan Wetter recorded her 100th career block with the Purple.

Despite a 10-1 deficit to start set one and trailing by as many as 10, the Tommies fought back to close the margin to four late. Wetter's first kill was the start of a 7-2 run that also included three straight kills from senior Lauren Galvin, who led all Tommies with nine kills. Back-to-back kills from junior Tezra Rudzitis cut the Gophers' lead to four, 24-20 but couldn't complete the 10-point comeback.

Redshirt freshman Addie Schmotzer recorded her first of a team-high three blocks to open the second set, which would be the only Tommie lead of the game. Minnesota quickly extended its lead to nine, 12-3, just before St. Thomas scored five straight points to force a timeout. The Gophers bounced back with six of the set's next seven points to pull away again.

Like the opening set, the Tommies battled back from an early deficit to push the Gophers at the end. Trailing 21-13, St. Thomas went on an 8-3 run behind two kills from senior Lander Friederichs, who also added two block assists with sophomore Miriam Unongo, to draw within three, 24-21. A block assist from Minnesota closed the match with a final set score of 25-21.
