Women’s Soccer pushed to 1-1 tie with Drake

8/15/2024 7:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Tommies scored the 2024 season’s first goal in the second half but relinquished the lead nine minutes later.

ST. PAUL, Minn.—Senior captain Abby Brantner's eighth career goal put the St. Thomas Women's Soccer team (0-0-1) in front, but the Drake University Bulldogs (0-0-1) battled back for a goal of their own less than ten minutes later to kick off the 2024 season at South Field with a 1-1 tie in front of a crowd of 450.

Recap
The game's first 45 minutes ended in a scoreless tie, but the St. Thomas goalkeeper Olivia Rowe was tested with five shots on goal against. Rowe kept a flurry of shots out of the net in the 10th, 14th, and 15th minute to keep the score level.

St. Thomas placed just two shots on net in the first half, off the foot of Mariah Nguyen in the third minute and Tatum Trettel in the 45th. Trettel's shot on net came five minutes after the junior received her first yellow card of the season. Drake's Catie Johnson was given a yellow card of her own 35 seconds later. Neither team would receive a card in the second half.

The Bulldogs outshot the Tommies 5-2 in the first half. Angela Gutierrez led the way for Drake with two shots on goal.

Drake came out of the halftime break with the second frame's first shot on goal when Gutierrez failed to get one by Rowe at 48'.

The Purple battled up the field after Rowe's save and in quick succession Mariah Nguyen had three shots blocked at 50' and 51'. The third of which was ruled to have been played by the hand of a Drake defender while within the box.

The infraction gave Abby Brantner and the Tommies a golden opportunity and, for the first time in her career, Brantner sent home the penalty kick in the 51st minute. That good fortune was short-lived as the reigning regular season MVC champions rallied for a run towards the Tommie goal at 61'.

Lily Overstreet fed a long ball through to a streaking Isabella Balsley who, while battling with Tommie freshman Brooke Nygaard, rifled a shot beneath the right arm of Olivia Rowe

Drake's run of pressure continued, but the Tommie defense was able to stave off a tiebreaking goal despite two shots on net in the final 10 minutes of play.
