NORTHBROOK, ILL. – With preseason around the corner, the University of St. Thomas football team is gearing up for the 2024 season. The Tommies are already making headlines, as senior Jacob Wildermuth (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) was announced as a nominee for the 2024 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, the organization announced Wednesday, July 17.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team looks to highlight college football student-athletes and coaches whose community service efforts go above and beyond the field of competition. In 2024, the organization partnered with the Wuerffel Foundation to bring together two of the most meaningful awards in college football, looking to honor a student-athlete who is inspired to serve others and make a positive impact on society. Wildermuth served both Tommie football and the St. Paul community in 2023, tallying nearly 75 community service hours during the season thanks to his work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Thanks to his work off the field, Wildermuth was a finalist at the Tommie Choice Awards for the St. Thomas Community Service Award for a male student-athlete and helped the football team win the Service Award.
A wide receiver for St. Thomas, Wildermuth appeared in eight games as a wide receiver in 2023, racking up 187 receiving yards on 20 catches with three touchdowns. He provided a highlight of the season, catching the game-winning touchdown in a comeback win over Morehead State on September 23. He also caught touchdowns against Dayton and Drake before his season was sidelined due to injury. Wildermuth was named to the Pioneer Football League (PFL) Academic Honor Roll at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
The 22 member Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is selected by a panel of former award winners, current and former college football head coaches and members of the media. The finalists will be announced in September with 11 student-athletes hailing from the FBS and the other 11 slots being split between student-athletes from FCS, Division II and III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). To be considered for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, student-athletes must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining good academic standing.
