SELLERSBURG, Ind. – University of St. Thomas Men's Golf completed 18 holes at the Summit League Championship with a four-player score of 286 (-2) for fifth place of the nine times competing. The Tommies were led by two 70's (-2) from sophomore Owen Rexing and senior Mattew Armstrong who finished the day in a three-way tie for 13th place.
The Purple are nine strokes out of the podium and 13 strokes behind the Kansas City Roos who completed day one with a two-stroke lead over the field. Armstrong and Rexing are each within four strokes of the overall individual leader.
Owen Rexing got out to a scorching start through the first 15 holes, his four birdies had him vying for a top-five first round finish before he bogeyed holes 16 and 18 to end the day two strokes under par. Armstrong played well throughout the day, shooting even on the front nine with a birdie on the fifth and bogey on the seventh. The senior did not shoot a hole over par on the back nine and stacked back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th to end up tied with his teammate.
Freshman Gavin Newkirk finished the day with an even 72 in a tie for 21st place. His round produced a symmetrical scorecard with a birdie and bogey on both the front and back. He started the day with a birdie on the very first hole and then bogeyed the fifth. He again started on the right foot on the back nine with a birdie on the 11th but bogeyed the final hole of his day.
Will Frazier rounded out the scoring four with a 74 (+2) in a tie for 32nd place. Frazier alternated bogeys and birdies on holes three and four, six and seven, nine and 10, and 13 and 14, with two extra bogeys on 11 and 16. He shot under on the front nine despite the turbulence but could not remain beneath par by the conclusion of day one.
Zach Rouleau finished the day with a 79 (+7) in 44th place. His score did not factor into the Toms' overall 286 (-2).
