Tommies top Northern Colorado in series opener, 10-7

4/26/2024 6:11:00 PM | Baseball

Maulik, Vos each recorded a home run and three RBI in game one against the Bears

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After nine games on the road, St. Thomas baseball finally returned home to Koch Diamond facing off against Northern Colorado in game one of a three game series.  The Tommies (15-18, 10-5 Summit) were able to climb back from an early deficit and maintain the lead against Northern Colorado (8-31-1, 7-11-1 Summit), winning the game 10-7 on Friday afternoon.

Northern Colorado took an early lead in the first inning with a three-run home run. St. Thomas quickly answered back in the bottom of the third with their own three-run homer by Matthew Maulik, tying up the game.

After some back and forth between the Tommies and the Bears in the fifth, St. Thomas gained an 8-5 lead with an RBI-single from Brigs Richartz in the bottom of the sixth.

Northern Colorado was threatening to take the lead with the bases loaded, no outs in the bottom of the eighth until Max Skilbeck was able to strike out the side, leaving the runners stranded on base.

To give some insurance to the Tommies, Joe Vos crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of giving St. Thomas a three-run lead. Vos ended his day at the plate with three RBIs and two runs.

Max Moris and Brigs Richartz went 3-for-4 in game one, while Gottschalk and Vos added tallied two hits each.

The St. Thomas pitching staff combined for 14 total strikeouts, as Skilbeck tallied a season-high of seven on Friday afternoon.
