Softball completes weekend series sweep of South Dakota

4/21/2024 3:18:00 PM | Softball

Crawford tosses complete game, Wukawitz launches seventh home run of the season, Kenzie Miller comes through with the game-winning hit.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (14-31, 8-7 Summit League) knocked off the South Dakota Coyotes (19-28, 4-10 Summit League), completing the series sweep.

Starting pitcher Christina Crawford threw a complete game her fifth in a row, her second of the series and 12th of the year, and Kenzie Miller brought in two runs on her RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to win it for St. Thomas.

GAME RECAP
Neither team wasted any time in this one. South Dakota put up a pair of runs in the top of the first, and the Tommies answered with a pair of their own. An RBI groundout by Laken Lienhard would score Avery Wukawitz, and with runners on the corners, Kaitlyn Raymond would score on a throw down to second base.

After a scoreless second inning for each team, South Dakota would add on three more runs, putting the Coyotes in front 5-2. St. Thomas would get one back, courtesy of Wukawitz's seventh home run of the year, making it 5-3.

St. Thomas added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Wukawitz would come around to score on an RBI double from Lienhard.

The Tommies kept South Dakota off the board in the top of the sixth and would do some more damage in the bottom half. With two runners on and two outs in the inning, Miller ripped a ball up the middle that brought home both runners and give St. Thomas a 6-5 lead.

Crawford shut it down in the 7th, earning her second complete game of the weekend, securing a 6-5 victory.

The win marks the team's fourth in a row and they are now 7-1 over their last eight games.
