Winning game one 11-6, the Tommies fall in one-run game to split with the Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D. –  St. Thomas baseball faced South Dakota State in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Tommies (14-16, 9-5 Summit) split the Sunday doubleheader with South Dakota State (17-20, 9-8 Summit) at Erv Huether Field.

Game One – W, 11-6
For the second game this weekend, Max Moris put the Tommies on the board first. After two scoreless innings, back-to-back RBI singles for Moris and Matthew Maulik put the Tommies in the lead.

Scoring multiple runs in four innings this afternoon, St. Thomas defeated South Dakota State in game one, 11-6.

Six Tommies recorded multi-hit games, and seven different Tommies tallied RBIs for the Purple.

In his fifth start of the season Evan Esch (2-2) allowed six hits, walked just one batter, and totaled nine strikeouts and four scoreless innings in 6.0 innings of work. Wyatt Nelson recorded his first save of the season, allowing two hits and striking out two batters in 3.0 innings.

Game Two – L, 4-3
For the first time this series, South Dakota State opened scoring in game two of the doubleheader.

After the Jackrabbits scored one, the Tommies quickly responded as Brigs Richartz recorded his third home run of the season to tie the game in the top of the second frame.

Capitalizing on South Dakota State errors, St. Thomas added two runs in the fifth inning to take its first lead of the game. However, South Dakota State responded, scoring the equalizing run in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams worked two scoreless innings, until the Jackrabbits added one in the bottom of the eighth. Unable to comeback in the final at bat, the Tommies fell by a score of 4-3.

In his ninth start of the season, Devon Schewe recorded six strikeouts through 3.0 innings of work. Kolby Gartner (3-2) totaled six strikeouts through 4.1 innings on Sunday afternoon.
