The freshman improved on his -2 in round two with a personal-best 68 (-3) to finish sixth of 105 golfers.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – St. Thomas Men's Golf finished in a tie for seventh place out of 18 teams at the RedHawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course. The Tommies' three-round score of 865 (+13) landed them just six strokes outside of the top-five. Gavin Newkirk (6th) and Owen Rexing (T-8th) each finished the tournament in the top-10.

Newkirk's 68 (-3) was a career-best, his second round below par of the tournament, and tied for sixth-lowest score of the final round. The freshman tallied three birdies on both the front and back nines including three straight on holes 10, 11, and 12. He was the top Summit League finisher at the tournament. He tallied a 72 (+1) in the first round, 69 (-2) in the second, and 68 (-3) in the third for a 209 (-4) overall.

Owen Rexing continued his consistent stretch of golf with a 72 (+1) during the week's final round. The sophomore birdied three holes and eagled the par-five first hole. A costly double bogey on the 18th hole dropped him into a six-way tie for eighth place. Rexing shot the first two rounds under par for a combined 211 (-2).

Matt Armstrong matched his first round effort with a 73 (+2) and finished with a 213 ( E) in a tie for 15th place. The senior parred seven holes on the front nine but also added a +4 on the third hole and a bogey on the fifth. He cleaned up on the back without shooting over par on a single hole while adding three birdies.

Both Will Frazier and Glavine Schugel put together their best rounds on Tuesday. Frazier improved by three strokes on his consecutive +8 rounds yesterday and finished with a 234 (+21) in 97th place. Schugel improved tremendously with a +3 during the final round after a +11 and +9 a day ago. His 236 landed him in 99th

QUOTING COACH MATT RACHEY
"It was a breakthrough week for Gavin. I really am proud of him and the improvements he has made. He has been working incredibly hard and it was a matter of time before the results showed. Gavin is maturing in his tournament golf processes and learning what it takes to be successful on championship golf courses."

"Owen and Matt also had very solid weeks and led us for the entirety of the event. We need some stability at the backend of the lineup and for individuals to step up as we prepare for the conference championship."
