Matthew Armstrong put together a spectacular 18 holes with a 65 (-6) in round two, the second lowest single round score of the tournament.
SYLVANIA, Ohio – The University of St. Thomas Men's Golf team battle through a tough round one with a team score under par in round two to finish day one of the Highland Meadows Intercollegiate 10 strokes over par in eighth place of 11 teams.
The Tommies enter the final round five strokes out of the top-five. Occupying that fifth spot is the only other Summit League foe in the field, North Dakota State. Minnesota, the only Power 5 team competing in the competition is in first, seven strokes clear of the field.
Matthew Armstrong was the bright spot in the Tommies rotation with an even par (71) in round one and a spectacular 65 (-6) in the second round. A total just one stroke off the program record. Armstrong finished tied for fourth place one stroke behind second and eight out of first.
Armstrong's first round was choppy with four birdies and four bogeys. All four of his holes over par came on the back nine (holes 10, 11, 14, and 15). Three of his four birdies were on the front nine (3, 5, and 9). His second round was mesmerizing with five birdies on the front nine and two back-to-back directly following his only blemish of the round, a hole-15 par-three bogey. There were just two other golfers who shot as low as a 65, one of them was the leader Ben Warian from Minnesota.
The Tommies' next highest day-one finisher was sophomore Owen Rexing who ended the day in a tie for 21stplace with a 143 (+1). He shot very consistently between the two rounds with a 72 (+1) to start the day and an even par (71) to finish it. The highlight of his performance was an eagle on hole one, a par four.
Freshmen Zach Rouleau (competing as an independent) and Gavin Newkirk tied for 33rd place with 145's (+3). They mirrored rounds with a 72 from Rouleau and a 73 from Newkirk in round one and a 73 from Rouleau and 72 from Newkirk in round two.
St. Thomas' final scoring golfer, Matthew Garside, finished the day tied for 63rd place with a +13. Will Frazier rounded out the Tommie lineup with a +14 in a tie for 66th place.
