SYLVANIA, Ohio – The University of St. Thomas Men's Golf team played one of their best team rounds of golf in program history with a round three low score of -8 to move up four spots into fourth place at the Highland Meadows Intercollegiate.
The Toms' -8 was matched by Miami of Ohio in the second round and bested by only Minnesota's -11 in round two yesterday. Minnesota won the meet; nine strokes clear of Miami. The Purple finished eight strokes behind third and two in front of North Dakota State.
St. Thomas rallied for two consecutive rounds under par after a frustrating +11 to open competition in Ohio this week.
Matt Armstrong again led the way with a 67 (-4) to lock him in at second place. The senior finished three strokes ahead of third place and lost by five strokes to a Power 5 golfer, Armstrong outshot him by three during the final round. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native played mistake-free golf for the most part with four birdies and 14 pars. He did not bogey a single hole during his final round. He bogeyed just one hole during his final 36 holes of the tournament.
Owen Rexing improved to a tie for 12th place after a 68 (-3) during the final round today for an overall score of 211 (-2). The sophomore had a turbulent front nine with four birdies and three bogeys but settled things down on the back with two birdies and no holes over par. He improved in each round from a 72 (+1) to a 71 ( E) to today's 68 (-3).
Freshman Gavin Newkirk was the third and final Tommie with a final round under par by shooting a 70 (-1) after rounds of 72 and 73 yesterday. He moved up into a tie for 26th place with a 215 (+2) overall tournament score. Newkirk birded six holes but lost ground on a costly seven on a par four on the front nine. He rallied four of those birdies on the back without a single hole over par.
Zach Rouleau was the next lowest Tommie but competed as an independent, so his scores did not help the overall team totals. His 220 (+7) placed him in a tie for 40th place. Will Frazier improved to a tie for 54th place with his best round of the tournament, an even 71 in the final round. Matt Garside dropped to 57th place with his best round of the tournament, a 73 (+2) on the last 18 holes.
