The Tommies positioned themselves in seventh place of 18 teams after an eight-stroke improvement from round one to round two.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – St. Thomas Men's Golf finished in seventh placed with a collective 578 (+10) after two rounds at the RedHawk Invitational, seven strokes outside the top five of the 18 teams competing. The Tommies improved tremendously on their second go around a course that hosted the U.S. Open in 2015 by shaving off eight strokes as a squad.

Owen Rexing was the Purple's most consistent golfer across both rounds, shooting a 69 (-2) and 70 (-2) to earn him a top-10 placement out of a 106-golfer field. Rexing's first round got off to a shaky start with two bogeys in his first seven holes, but the sophomore battened down the hatches and played inspired golf after bogeying holes six and seven. He birdied three of his next five holes, added one more on the back nine, and finished without shooting over par on his final 11 holes. He added four birdies during round two, including a par-five 18th hole to conclude the day and lock up a spot in the top-10 with one round to come.

Recent TicketSmarter Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, Matthew Armstrong struggled during his first round, shooting a 73 (+2), but shot a team-low 67 (-4) in the second to finish day one in 11th place. His 67 was met or bested by just seven other golfers on the day between the first 36 holes. He played bogeyless golf in the front nine with three birdies, including the final two before heading onto the back nine. He then bogeyed and birdied two of his first five and wrapped the day with a birdie on the 18th hole, his sixth of the round.

Freshman, Gavin Newkirk played his best golf as a Tommie on Monday with a career-best 69 (-2) during the second round. That, combined with a 72 (+1) landed him in a tie for 16th place after day one. Newkirk birdied four on the front nine but also bogeyed two. Two more bogeys on the back were nullified by his incredible eagle on the 18th hole, the Tommies shot a collective -5 on the 18th hole of round two.

Will Frazier struggled with consecutive rounds of 79 (+8) to finish in 99th and Glavine Schugel rounded out the Tommie order with an 82 (+11) and an 80 (+9) in a tie for 101st place.
