2/3/2024 3:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Langbehn leads with 22 points in the victory
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team picked up where it left off Thursday night. After beating Omaha earlier this week, the Tommies earned an impressive 75-55 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Saturday afternoon. With the victory, St. Thomas extended its win streak to three games, and improve to 14-9 overall and 6-3 in the Summit League standings. The team's 14 wins is also the most in Division I history, surpassing the program's 13 wins in 2022-23.
Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) led the charge offensively with 22 points thanks to 9-11 shooting from the floor. Ball movement also played a factor for the Tommies, as they registered 18 assists on 27 baskets.
RECAP
Things did not necessarily get off to the greatest start for the Tommies, as they struggled on both ends of the floor. After a 7-0 Kansas City run to start the game, the St. Thomas defense locked in, tallyinf three steals in the first quarter to narrow the deficit to 14-12 after the opening 10 minutes of play. Langbehn and the St. Thomas offense got rolling in the second quarter. While Langbehn continued to have a hot hand shooting, the Tommies defense was absolutely stifling, holding the Roos to just nine points in the entirety of the second quarter. This allowed St. Thomas to walk into the locker room with a 28-23 halftime lead.
The offense was just getting started, however. The Tommies outscored Kansas City 23-13 coming out of the locker room in the third quarter. Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) recorded five points in under two minutes to quickly increase the lead to 37-26. St. Thomas was able to get to the free throw line ten times in the third, and, with the help of a 3-7 performance from behind the arc, the Tommies ended the quarter with a 51-36 lead.
St. Thomas showed no signs of letting up in the final ten minutes, shooting an impressive 9-16 from the field in a 24-point fourth quarter. Langbehn scored six of her 22 points in the final ten minutes, powering the Tommies to a 75-55 win.
