Early offense does not carry Softball to victory

The Tommies scored four runs in the first two times up to bat but lost the lead late to the UTSA Roadrunners.
COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – St. Thomas Softball (1-14) dropped the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational to the Texas San Antonio Roadrunners (4-11) 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at the Davis Diamond on the campus of Texas A&M.
GAME RECAP
The Tommies played the role of the visiting team against the Roadrunners and took advantage with a run in the top of the first inning. Avery Wukawitz led off with a walk, Cassidy Carby reached on a one-out error after Wukawitz stole second, and Ella Cook walked the bases loaded. Morgan Klein drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs for her fifth RBI in two games.
UTSA grabbed a run right back in the bottom of the first inning with three straight two-out singles off Tommie starter Christina Crawford.
Kyllie Weingart led off for the Toms' best inning of the day with a one-out double. Wukawitz bunted her over to third while reaching first. She then stole her second base of the game and scored behind Weingart on Kaitlyn Raymond's single to the left-center field gap.
Cassidy Carby singled to move Raymond to second and then Ella Cook doubled to the same gap in the outfield to score Raymond and give the Tommies a 4-1 lead.
Crawford pitched three straight scoreless frames with just two baserunners allowed (one walk and one fielding error).
The Roadrunners struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and two more in the sixth to take the lead.
Laken Lienhard began the Purple's seventh inning rally with a one-out walk and Morgan Klein added her second walk of the game. Abbi Stierlen scored one run on a single down the right field line. The Tommies had runners on the corners with one out and down by one run but could not push the equalizing run home from third.
Avery Wukawitz (1-3, 2R, BB), Kaitlyn Raymond (2-4, 1R, 2RBI, 2B), Laken Lienhard (0-2, 2BB, 1R), and Morgan Klein (0-1, 1RBI, 2BB) each reached base safely more than once. Ella Cook's first inning double was the only other extra base hit of the ballgame for the Tommies.
Christina Crawford pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run on eight hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. The defense was responsible for four errors.

St. Thomas are back on the road to the Southeastern Illlinois Edwardsville Invitational next weekend for five games on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of March. They will play Loyola Chicago and Illinois State on Friday, Creighton and SIUE on Saturday, and wrap up the tournament with their second game against Illinois State.
