Softball with two setbacks in Arizona

The Tommies fell in five innings to both Northwestern and Grand Canyon during day two of the Kajikawa Classic.
PHOENIX, Ariz. – St. Thomas Softball (0-4) could not put the pieces together today. They lost game one to the Northwestern Wildcats (3-1) in five innings by a score of 11-1. Grand Canyon (4-0) delivered the Toms a 12-3 defeat in five innings.
GAME ONE RECAP
The #25 ranked Northwestern Wildcats were the 2023 Big Ten Champions a season ago and pounced on the Tommies early in the first inning for two runs. The 'Cats added six more runs in the top of the second off St. Thomas' starter Christina Crawford.
Morgan Klein came in to relieve her teammate and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings before allowing three two-out runs in the top of the fifth.
The Toms' only tally came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ella Cook doubled home Morgan Klein who led off with a four-pitch walk.
Laken Lienhard recorded her first career hit as a Tommie with one out in the first inning. Morgan Klein also added a single in the game. Avery Wukawitz and Cook each doubled in the losing effort.
GAME TWO RECAP
Grand Canyon scored early and often in the nightcap against St. Thomas with three runs in the first and second, and six runs in the third.
Cassidy Carby's three-run home run cut the game to 6-3 in the top of the third but Grand Canyon sealed it in the bottom half of the inning.
The Tommies mustered just two hits, the Carby home run and a Morgan Klein single.
UP NEXT
The Tommies play their final game of the Kajikawa classic in Tempe tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. central standard time as they face-off with the Wisconsin Badgers. St. Thomas' first Power 5 win came in Madison against Wisconsin last season.
