Men's Hockey falls in defensive battle

The Tommies lost in overtime, 2-1 on the road against Augustana.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (13-14-1, 11-7-0 CCHA) was stymied by Augustana's (10-15-3) extraordinary offensive effort and lost 2-1 in overtime on the road at Midco Arena Saturday night.
GAME RECAP
Augustana scored on their second shot of the game at 2:13 in the first period. Shots were even for the rest of the frame at 12 on goal each way. The Tommies won 12 of 19 faceoffs in the period.
St. Thomas' best chance of the first period came at 10:40 on the power play. The Purple peppered three shots on net but could not best freshman goaltender Kayden Hargraves. Augustana was whistled for a tripping penalty at 19:53. Lucas Wahlin got a good look out of the power play faceoff to the right of Hargraves but could not equalize. The Tommies began the third period on their second power play.
St. Thomas came up empty on the power play again, to begin the second period. Tim Piechowski scored his second goal of the series 46 seconds later. Cole Miller and Quinton Pepper teamed up for the assists on the equalizing tally.
The Toms had one more power play opportunity but once more came up empty handed. Special teams were not a complete loss in the period, however. The Toms were a perfect four-for-four on the penalty kill that included 1:03 five-on-three situation.
Aaron Trotter made all seven saves in the frame as the Purple outshot the Vikings 12-7.
The goaltending duel continued throughout the final twenty minutes. Hargraves stopped all 11 shots he faced, and Trotter made 12 saves in the period.
St. Thomas began the three-on-three overtime on a two-minute power play for an Augustana trip as regulation expired. The Toms did not take advantage. Augustana scored the game-winner at 2:42 in the extra frame.

The Tommies return to CCHA play for the final stretch of regular season games. They host Bowling Green for two games on home ice on Friday February 16 and Saturday the 17th at 7:07 p.m. and 6:07 p.m.
