11/7/2024 11:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ST. PAUL, MINN. - When things are going well, they go extremely well for the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team. After earning an 84-81 win over Milwaukee on Monday, the Tommies improved to 2-0 Thursday with a dominant 99-33 win over Crown College. In the process, St. Thomas set the DI era record for points scored in a single quarter and saw four student-athletes score in double-digits. It also counts as the first 2-0 start in the DI era for the Tommies, who will travel to Northern Illinois on Sunday.
RECAP:
It was all St. Thomas from start to finish, though it did take a minute for the offense to get going. In fact, the score stood at 2-2 for the first three full minutes of play, as neither the Tommies nor Polars could get shots to fall. Crown also held an early lead over St. Thomas, jumping ahead 6-4 on a layup by Brayli Reimer. The lead, though, was short-lived. Over the next quarter and a half, the Tommies would outscore the Polars 36-0, jumping out to a 33-6 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Kammie Ludwig (Geneseo, Ill. / Genseo) kickstarted the run with her first three-pointer in the Purple, and St. Thomas was off to the races, scoring a DI era record 33 points in the first quarter.
From that point on, the Tommies simply could not stop scoring. St. Thomas tacked on 21 points in the second quarter and surrendered only 14, allowing the Tommies to walk into the locker room with a 54-20 halftime lead. Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) and Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) emerged as the stars of the first half, closing with 11 and 10 points for St. Thomas, respectively.
Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) came to life in the second half, scoring 10 of the Tommies first 11 points of the third quarter to make it 64-24 three minutes in. Several newcomers also joined the scoring in the second 20 minutes of play, including Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany). The first year scored 14 points in the second game of her collegiate career on 4-9 shooting, but it was Werner who was nearly perfect, scoring 14 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor and eight rebounds.
In the end, St. Thomas was simply too much for Crown, as another high scoring quarter secured the 99-33 victory for the Tommies.
