Women’s Hockey ties #12 Penn State in game two of Smashville Showcase

Clough scores in 1-1 tie against Penn State
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team faced #12 Penn State in game two of the Smashville Showcase. After two scoreless periods, each team scored in the third frame to send the game to overtime. With neither team scoring in the overtime period, St. Thomas (5-11-2, 2-9-1 WCHA) picked up a 1-1 tie against Penn State (13-4-1, 6-0-0 AHA) on Saturday afternoon.
RECAP
It was a scoreless 45 minutes at the Ford Ice Center Bellevue in the matchup between St. Thomas and Penn State.
There were seven penalties assessed during the first 40 minutes, and 11 throughout the game, as St. Thomas successfully defended six Penn State power plays.
Early in the third period Maddy Clough scored the game's first goal off a one-time pass from Ella Boerger, putting the Tommies in the lead.
Battling for the equalizer, Penn State went back on the power play late in regulation. The Nittany Lions called their goaltender to the bench, playing with a 6-on-4 advantage. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Penn State tied the game with 1:29 remaining.
St. Thomas went to overtime for the second time this weekend, and fourth time against a ranked opponent this season.
With neither team scoring during the overtime frame, the Tommies earned the 1-1 tie against non-conference opponent Penn State.
The Showcase held a shootout to determine the winner of the third-place game, as Penn State earned the shootout victory in the seventh round on Saturday.
Dani Strom finished the game totaling 33 saves and a .971 SV% against the Nittany Lions.
