Men’s Hockey scored two goals in the final 12 minutes of the third period but fell 5-3 to Lake State
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Lake Superior State (7-6-1 overall, 5-1-0) handed the St. Thomas Tommies (3-8-4 overall, 2-5-3 CCHA) a conference setback, five goals to three, on Saturday night in front of over 500 fans at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Alexander Tell scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Lucas Wahlin and Matthew Gleason were the other two goal scorers for the Purple. Liam Malmquist tallied two assists. Aaron Trotter stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced in goal.
Recap
The now first place Lakers came from behind for the second time in as many days to sweep the St. Thomas Tommies on their home ice. Yesterday it was Lake State taking a 1-0 lead, today it was the Tommies' Swedish freshman Alexander Tell who tucked his first collegiate goal to get the night started. Tell scored at 12:16 from Jake Braccini and Casy Laylin.
St. Thomas dominated much of the period with a string of well-played hockey, but they took their foot off the gas pedal for just one minute and the Lakers took advantage. They converted two Tommie turnovers into goals at 19:07 and 19:52 to send the Toms into their locker room stunned.
The Lakers scored again at 7:17 in the second period to take a 3-1 lead over the Purple. They then added another just over two minutes later at 9:27, their second quick strike of the game. St. Thomas fought off a Lake State power play during the waning seconds of the period. Overall, the Toms' penalty kill fought off five Laker power plays, holding the CCHA's best special teams unit off the scoreboard.
Lucas Wahlin did some damage at 8:23 in the third period with a power play goal from Liam Malmquist and Chase Foley. The junior captain sniped a beautiful shot, top shelf, to bring the Toms to within two goals. It was Wahlin's sixth goal of the campaign.
While killing off a penalty of their own, the Tommies took advantage of a Lake State roughing minor penalty at 17:42, when Matthew Gleason tipped in a shot from Liam Malmquist. Their second power play goal of the game made it a one-goal margin. Ryan O'Neill also assisted on the play.
The Tommies pulled their goalie at 17:42 and put just one shot on goal before Connor Milburn deposited his second empty net goal of the weekend. Almost instantly after the goal, there was a brawl between nearly every skater on the ice. After video review, eight players were given minor and 10-minute major penalties, four for LSSU and four for UST. The grand total of penalty minutes in the game tallied up to 114, 58 for the Toms and 56 for the Lakers.
