Kealy gets 16th double double of the season
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Morgan Kealy recorded her 16th double double of the season Saturday afternoon as St. Thomas volleyball fell to Omaha in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 19-25) in Schoenecker Arena. Kealy ended with 24 assists and 11 digs as the Tommies fall to 14-10 overall and 6-6 in the Summit League.
A string of kills helped St. Thomas overcome a quick Omaha lead to start the match, as a kill from Ellie Gustafson followed by three straight from Lauren Galvin pushed the Tommie lead to 6-3. After a UNO kill, the Purple added another three straight points including kills from Morgan Kealy and Addie Schmotzer for its largest lead of the set, 9-4. A mid-set run allowed Omaha to pull back and tie, 17-17, before taking the lead again, 20-19. UNO pulled within two points of the set win before a Maverick error and kill by Gustafson again cut the deficit to one, 23-22. A pair of kills lifted UNO to the opening game win.
The Mavericks led for the entirety of the second set, leading by as many as five early, 9-4. Kealy fooled the UNO defense on a dump kill to spark a 6-2 run, which was capped by a block assist from Gustafson and Megan Wetter, to pull within one, 12-11. Omaha scored eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead again, but three straight from St. Thomas cut the deficit to 20-16. A service ace from Kealy and block assist by Galvin and Schmotzer helped the Tommies cut the deficit down again, 23-21, but the Mavericks used two kills to go ahead, 2-0.
Like the first set, St. Thomas overcame an early deficit of 5-2 to tie the set 6-6. Neither team led by more than two points while four Tommies recorded kills during a 4-1 run for the team's first lead, 13-12. Omaha answered with a kill and back-to-back service aces ahead of the 15-point media timeout. Wetter came out of the timeout with back-to-back kills for the Tommies, but a 5-1 run gave the Mavericks momentum towards the end of the set.
