Men’s Hockey falls to Minnesota on the road

The Golden Gophers scored seven unanswered after Liam Malmquist’s first of the season

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-1-0 overall) were too much for the St. Thomas men's hockey team (1-2-1 overall) to handle on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci getting seven goals through in a 7-1 victory.

Liam Malmquist scored in the first period from Lucas Wahlin and Chase Foley. Jake Sibell stopped 26 of the 33 shots he faced. The Gophers outshot the Tommies 33-21. The first St. Thomas opponent to outshoot the Toms this season.

Recap
St. Thomas got the first period started on a high note with Liam Malmquist's first goal of the season at 6:43 from Lucas Wahlin and Chase Foley. The goal came on a rush from a breakout with Lucas Wahlin leaving the puck in the high slot for Malmquist who sniped it over the right shoulder of the Gopher netminder. Not a single stoppage preceded the Tommies' goal.

The Gophers' top-tier offense answered back with three goals over a span of the final nine minutes of the opening frame. Minnesota scored at 11:13, 12:29, and 17:32 to carry a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission. They outshot the Purple 10-6.

Minnesota continued the pressure with their fourth goal on their 11th shot at 7:48 in the second period. The Tommies drew their first power play of the game 10:56 after a Minnesota boarding penalty but came up empty with just one shot on goal.

The Gophers got their first power play of the game just over one minute into the final frame when Lucas Wahlin was whistled for a slash. St. Thomas' stingy penalty kill continued until the very last second of the Minnesota power play. Friday night's officials took a look at a replay review of a possible fifth Gopher goal but did not see enough evidence to overturn the no-goal call on the ice.

Minnesota added three more down the stretch to bring the game to its 7-1 finish. The Tommies finished the game going 3-3 on the penalty kill to raise their penalty kill percentage to .929.
