Junior becomes first player in DI era to surpass the milestone

FARGO, N.D. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team faced a tough challenge Thursday evening: beating North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. The Bison were 7-0 in the Scheels Center entering Thursday night's Summit League contest, and the Tommies were looking to a mark in the loss column. Unfortunately, Thursday was not St. Thomas' night, as the team lost to the Bison 85-52, falling to 11-9 on the year and 3-3 in Summit League play. Despite the loss, there was still plenty for the Tommies to celebrate, as Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) became the first women's basketball student-athlete to surpass 1000 points in the Division I era.

RECAP:
St. Thomas kept pace with North Dakota State in the first quarter, as the Tommies found themselves down by just one point, 16-15, after the first 10 minutes of play. Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) scored the opening four points of the game, helping St. Thomas jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Tommies, though, could not maintain their offensive dominance, and while they managed to keep pace with the Bison, they never regained an advantage. Free throws by Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) and Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) helped St. Thomas pull within one in the closing minute of the first.

The second quarter, though, was a very different story. North Dakota State held all the momentum and did not allow the Tommies to score a single point for nearly five full minutes. With a 31-18 advantage, it looked like the Bison would cruise to a big halftime lead. St. Thomas, though, hung around, using two jumpers from Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) to cut the deficit back down to a manageable 10 points. Last minute baskets by Hill and Angelina Hammond (Hopkins, Minn. / Hopkins) kept North Dakota State from pulling away fully, though the Tommies still walked into the locker room at half trailing 39-29.

Unfortunately for St. Thomas, the second quarter flurry did not carry over to the second half. In fact, the Bison would hold the Tommies to just six points in the third quarter, as the team struggled to generate offense against North Dakota State's stingy defense. The Bison, meanwhile, had no issues scoring, particular Elle Evans. North Dakota State's leading scorer tallied 13 points in the third quarter alone, shooting 4-5 from the floor, including a 3-3 mark from beyond the arc. Even without Evans' impressive third quarter shooting, the damage was done. Despite outscoring the Bison 17-16 in the fourth quarter, St. Thomas could not overcome the double-digit deficit, falling in Fargo, North Dakota by a final score of 85-52.

TOP TOMMIES

  • Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) was the lone Tommie to score double-digit points on Thursday, scoring 15 total on 5-11 shooting, including a 2-4 mark from three-point range.
  • Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and Phoebe Frentzel (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) led the team with six rebounds each.
  • Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) joined the 1000 point club Thursday afternoon, becoming the first St. Thomas player in the Division I era to surpass the milestone. Hill closed the game with six points, three assists and two steals.
