Tommies drop heartbreaker in Marquette, 3-2

1/19/2024 9:34:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Men’s Hockey fell two goals, crawled back in the second period, but was bested in regulation to put an end to their three-game win streak against the Wildcats.

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan (7-11-2 5-7-0 CCHA) struck for one goal in each period to down the University of St. Thomas Tommies (11-11-1 9-6-0 CCHA) 3-2 at the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Michigan.

The Toms came into the game first place in the CCHA and on a two-game win streak but could not fend off the Wildcats who were winless in their last two.

RECAP
Northern Michigan scored to open the game in the first period for the sixth game in a row. Matvei Kabanov got things started on the power play at 8:01 after Carsen Peters was called for an early interference penalty at center ice.

The Toms did not have many opportunities in the first, and mustered seven shots on net despite one power play and one four-on-four opportunity. Despite having won most of the faceoffs in the frame, it was Northern who tilted the ice in their favor.

The Wildcats repeated their first period success in the second with a goal at 2:59 from Michael Colella. Things stacked up well for the Wildcats after the goal with their second and third power play opportunities coming just four and six minutes later. The Purple successfully killed off both to keep the game to one score.

Second period play remained scoreless until St. Thomas earned a power play at 11:24. Mack Byers and Ethan Gauer cycled the puck along the blue line and then fed a perfect pass to Ryan O'Neill who cut the lead in half with a one-time goal.

The Tommies were not satisfied and scored the tying goal just under four minutes later. Cole Miller launched a shot from the point onto Luc Laylin's stick and past the Wildcats goaltender. The goal garnered an unsuccessful review by Northern for an apparent high stick.

For the third straight period the Wildcats struck first at 2:28. The Tommies outshot Northern Michigan 13-7 in the final frame but could not find the game-tying score.
